SOURCE: shifting problems

start with the clutch fluid, is it full? check the clutch cable from the pedal to the transmission, does it have a lot of play in it, is it adjustable? check the bushings on the shifter base, does the shifter itself have a lot of play in it? i'd start with those, if all those are ok then it might be the clutch itself. when a clutch gets worn down it doesn't release fully causing a hard shift or grinding when going into gear. put the truck on a flat surface so it doesn't free roll at all, with the engine off, put the truck in first or reverse, press the clutch pedal fully to the floor and start the engine. let off the brake. if the truck moves at all it means your clutch cable is out of adjustment or its just getting worn out. provifing the shifter and the fluid level is good.

SOURCE: Parking break light is always on (1994 Toyota Previa)

If you look where the parking brake arm is you should se a switch that it pushes against . The switch should be right above the parking brake arm .

SOURCE: toyota hilux 1998 3.0 deisel.

if the timeing belt starts to wear it could cause problems and if it snaps you can say goodby to your engine or a lot of cash to fix it, from the mileage it sounds like its well over due for a new one

No reverse and eats up gas like crazy I would like your help please and thank you

If the poor gas mileage is related (and it may not be), it could be the transmission torque convertor slipping or failure to shift out of low gear. How can you even start the van when it's in reverse? The neutral safety switch may be broken. Or do you mean you can only shift to reverse by parking and then restarting before shifting?

Start by checking your transmission fluid level. If it is very low, and especially if it looks or smells burnt, that's a probable cause of your problems. A burned smell indicates a need to have the transmission serviced ASAP. Best case: a flush and fill and maybe seal replacement (ask to observe the flush process - you're looking for fluid dripping from the ends of the transmission, which would indicate a bad seal or two). Worst case - the torque convertor is bad or the transmission needs a teardown repair.

How do I fix the transmission problem? The car is moving forward at neutral, drive and low gear, and switching to parking mode at reverse and parking. The car is not backing up at all.

Transmission may now be toast since you continued to drive it when maybe low on fluid or torque converter had failed. How long since last fluid and filter change? Ever?

I have a Toyota Matrix ( 2006). recently, after sitting outside for 6 hrs. would not shift into reverse or drive. Waited 10 minutes and restarted. Then it shifted into reverse! What is happening?

You have several ground wires on the transmission. 2 or 3 coming out of the harness and one big one going from the transmission to the body. Make sure they are secure.

1998 Camry Reverse noises

this really sounds like a broken motor mount / trans mount. An easy way to check is have someone sit in the car and shift into reverse, then to neutral, then to drive. Have your "assistant" do this repeatedly with the hood up, parking brake ON and foot FIRMLY applying the brakes while you watch the motor move. if you can see a big difference in "jump" between reverse and drive, that is a bad mount. The motor will lift or "jump" higher on the broken mount side. if your really not sure then try a gentle power brake in each direction.

Stiff gear shift

Hi Sam ! Have checked whether is there any problem by the where the shifting lever is? might something there is not working properly since is from parking to Reverse. the other option I agree with the CMI Toyota to change the cable. I had the similar case in my garage but with Nissan March and renewed the cable and works fine.

The warmer the engine gets, the harder the truck is to shift!

replace the fluid in clutch resaviour ALL of it
ILL bet the fluid is dark and not clear you got moisture in the fluid

water expands much more than hydraulic fluid to hot temps
making less "room" for piston travel in clutch slave
