There is no reset for the fuel pump. If you can bang on the fuel tank where the fuel pump is located and it starts you need a new fuel pump and fuel filter. The banging on the the pump just helps to get it going. Replace the fuel pump and filter.

No reset, you need a new fuel pump. Do yourself a favor and replace the fuel filter also.

Disconnected battery and reconnected it and car will crank over but will not start

Could be several items:

Would start with fuel pump. Can try banging on tank (if its in the tank) or tap on pump if outside.

To test fuel pump:

Locate fuel filter, disconnect line and on the exit end of the fuel pump. Turn ignition on and attempt to start. Be careful no open flames, or spark cuz if fuel pump is working gas will come out.

If no fuel now disconnect other end of fuel filter. Fuel filter is now removed. Try starting vehicle.

Note in most cases it will only put fuel out for 2-3 seconds to prime the fuel lines and then goes out for 5-10 while vehicle starts, then turning back on.

Having someone to help look will help when checking this. If fuel comes out now then the fuel filter is plugged. If nothing then fuel pump is toast.

Look up on YouTube how to remove fuel pump from either in tank or out of tank.

Its about 15 degrees here and my car will not start. i have 2004 mercury mountaineer. It started last night when it was only 9 degrees. What could be wrong? Antifreeze maybe? and if so where do i put it...

Not starting can be alot of things inculding frozen fuel lines or a fuel pump that so cold it won't turn. If it's cranking just fine you might try knocking on the fuel tank to shake the pump. with someone trying to start the car knock on the fuel tank and listen fort the pump. If the battery is too low the pump might not start but the engine may still crank. It might start if it warms up outside and you'll never know what the rerason was. Keeping your fuel tank above half a tank is a good idea too. Try to connect and jumper car to yours and let it charge the battery for awhile then try to start it as the extra voltage might be enough to start a cold pump.

99 f150 V6 cranks but no start not getting fuel at filter when cranking? spray starting fluid into intake runs for a few seconds?

Sounds like the electric fuel pump (inside the fuel tank) has died. You'll need to drain the tank, disconnect and drop it, and remove the pump/sender unit from the top of the tank. Haynes manuals give good instructions and pictures for this. Replacement units are readily available.

Oh - you might also check the fuel shutoff switch that is supposed to act as a safety device in case of impact. It's behind the passenger's side kick panel. Reset it by pressing the button on top.

Wont start

The fuel pump jump started? The fuel pump relay is in the dashboard relay center. The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. The pumps do fail entirely nd the fuel pump should make some sound if it's running. The fuel filter is on the firewall on the drivers side. It has a bleeder screw in the top of the bnjo bolt that holds the fuel line onto the filter. Loosening this bolt should release fuel pressure. With the bolt loose try to get the pump running ( knock on the relay, fuel tank, while cranking the engine) if fuel flows the engine should run if you don't have other problems. Low battery will crank the engine but not turn on the fuel pump and or the injection system and even the ingtion system. It may still crank and sound OK. Voltmeter the battery with the engine cranking, Less that 10 volts it's unlikly to start. John

1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

How do I replace a fuel pump on a 2003 escape? Engine not getting enough fuel so when starting car, I get crank but cannot get engine to turn over. Perhaps the pump can wait if someone has other...

Check to see if the inertia switch is tripped first. Read your owner manual for location and how to reset. Just push the button. It usually only trips in an accident to shut off the fule pump in case there is a leak.

here is how to replace the pump. It's good because you don't have to drop the tank!
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . (I disconnect inertia switch and crank engine for 10 seconds to revilve pressure).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. (I don't do this myself). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Lift the LH rear seat cushion.
  1. Position the carpet aside.
  1. Remove the screws and the fuel pump module access cover.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  1. Disconnect the fuel and vapor lines from the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
  1. s3k~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: The fuel tank may be pressurized. Remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. If a hissing sound is heard, wait until the condition stops before removing the fuel tank filler cap. If these precautions are not followed, fuel may spray and cause personal injury.
    Remove the gas cap.
  1. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module. (If you don't have tool, use a chisel or screwdriver and tap counterclockwise to rotate the ring).

  1. NOTE: Install a new fuel pump mounting gasket.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Start the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Not a bad job. buy pump on ebay or new at discount at tascafordparts.com

1994 Buick Park Ave fuel pump or relay reset??

No switch. Take a big rubber hammer and strike bottom of tank while someone is cranking car. Sometimes this will make pump work until you shut it off to replace the pump.
