Loosen the bolts that attach the power steering pump to the bracket. then push the pump down. this should make the belt loose enough to get off. then put the new belt on. take a pry bar and stick between the motor and the power steering pump through the top. push on the pry bar to raise the power steering pump and tighten the belt. while pushing on the pry bar to keep tension on the belt tighten the bolts that you loosened and you've changed your power steering belt. this can be done by one person, but it's a lot easier with two.

My belt tensioner pully is going bad. Today, I lost my power steering. Can the tensioner cause this?

If the belt came off/broken you will have no power steering. If the fluid is low/empty you will have no power steering.

I have a 97 grand prix and the power steering is messed up it makes a grinding sound and today my daughter was driving it and there was smoke coming oiut from under the manifold and it smelled like rubber...

Hello,
Sounds to me like the bearings are worn out on the power steering pump and thats what you are hearing. Due to the fact all the other pulley are trying to spin at their normal rate and the bearings on the power steering pump are grinding, the Serpentine Belt is probably smoking too. Change the power steering pump (now) and inspect the Serpentine Belt real real good before you put it back on as it may very well need replaced now too.

The power steering is out and I can hear a pulley going bonkers. There is a squealing sound like a belt isn't catching, and also an oscillating sound like a pulley is loose and moving back and forth or...

i am having a similar problem. my power steering pully is loose. im pretty sure i have to replace the pump and the pully however my power steering still works but the belt squeals.check all the pullys they drive the belt or belts. its usually always either the tensioner thats the pully that allows you to remove the drive belt or the power steering pully which sucks the most because you must remove the entire power steering pump to replace the pully and since you have to go through all that trouble you might as well replace the entire power steering pump as well. i am not a mechanic so try and find more information.

How do I change the serpentine belt on a 1998 Buick LeSabre, 3.8

My friend;
Try this;
  1. Check the belt pulley may have attaching tension bolts (Nuts), etc.
  2. Loose the belt pulley attaching tension bolts (Nuts), etc.
  3. Normally there are three bolts & or nuts u need to loose to allow u swivel the pulley side way.
  4. Once loose, swivel the pulley side way.
  5. Mostly, you don't have to remove the bolts & or nuts completely.
  6. You may need to remove other serpentine belt to reach the power steering belt.
  7. Removing those other belts work same as the power steering belts or other belts.

Change power steering pump

There is a dynamic tensioner roller, which you need to release before you remove the belt. See the manual, may be it can help you.

I have a squealing noise when the truck is running Worse when you turn the wheels. We just replaced the Power steering pump...Please Help

Suggest it may be power steering fluid, has made it's way on the power steering belt, causing belt slippage, and perhaps glazing the power steering belt. Even if a new one was put on. If so, the belt may need to be changed, also the pulleys need to be cleaned. Make sure those pulleys aren't glazed, by the belt slipping over them.

It could also be that the belt isn't tight enough, and/or worn out.
Make sure the hoses, going from the power steering pump to the steering box, are not leaking, at the back of the pump housing.
