Why a 1997 honda civic engine surges at idle

which engine, options there are many.???
cant fix any engine, until you know what it there.
a civic not Tacoma. as posted.
see end for engines ????

surge 101 (running gasoline?)
it caused by 2 things. (and lots of reasons)
1: engine running lean. all engines lean surge. fix that first.
hint use a scan tool see live data........?????
2: ISC system is faulting, the idle speed controller can fail for #1
or for itself. (it can stick) clean in.

wiki list of engines. (which one???????????????)_
The sixth generation featured engine options were available along with their first Natural Gas Powered Civic, the GX. From 1996-2000 the Civic was sold under the CX, DX, EX, EXR, HX, LX, and for Canada, SE, and Si trims; all base models were made with 1.6L engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (Honda D engine). The CX, DX, and LX all have D16y7 non-VTEC engines; whereas the EX has a D16y8 VTEC, and the HX has D16y5 VTEC-E. The USDM Si and Canadian SiR came with a DOHC (B16A2 VTEC). The first civic SI coupe EM1 was introduced in 1999 until 2000. Europe saw a DOHC 1.6 VTI hatch and sedan and a DOHC 1.8VTI engine was available for the Domani related five-door liftback and esta

Misfires

there are 50 causes of misfire. (and flooding)
50
what we do is, conduct simple tests to find what is going on.
but first do that missed , 60,000 mile tune up, it might fix the problem
in FACT , tuneups are 100% designed to what, stop misfire.

my wild guess is it flooding.
are the spark tips (all) soaking in fuel , stalled?

thats one test, and is free, for any show with basic tools.

if you need more help tell engines option and country.
gen 6 car. see quote below and why we dont know what's under your hood (your mech opens hood and goes, ahh, a............)

The sixth generation featured updated styling although less radical than previous redesigns. Suspension and engine options were available along with their first Natural Gas Powered Civic, the GX. Need spark plug wire diagram

next time pull wires 1by1 and win, or mark wires at take down
an cap too, all cars, all distribs.(dizzy)?????
or at the least mark the cap.#1
btw2, some caps are marked at factory , is yours?
we need engine type.,
its at alldata.com
and they will ask you the same question. what engine!
in usa , the 4 banger is 1,3,4,2 firing order.
the rotor turns clockwise.or CW
the 1.5 and 1.6L have a square back side cap.
square
3 and4
1 and 2
OR?
1342cc and 1488cc engines
has round dizzy cap. much harder. not marked.
finding TDC #1 is lots more work here.
ask or read the FSM or login to alldata.com. and see the steps.
nut shell. (usa)
the 1992 cam driven dizzy has offset cam, lugs. (bee's knee's)
so the dizzy only mounts 1 way but is static timed.
so on this engine, you put the engine to TDC firiing
that is, with all valves closed on #1 cylinder., ( we use a compression gauge to find TDC. the most easy)
then off the dizzy cap, the rotor now points to #1 firing.
put the #1 wire there, then CW ,3,4,2 in that order.
bam it runs.

as you can see , not all civics are the same, !
data: (what engine?) what country>????
. In North America the Si featured a SOHC VTEC valve train, whereas the VX featured the VTEC-E. The Japanese Si featured a DOHC non-VTEC valve train D16A9. Continuing in the sporty tradition of the original Civic SiR, Honda sold several similarly equipped variants of the fifth generation car, still referred to as the Civic SiR, in Japan, Asia, and Europe. In South Africa, MBSA(Mercedes Benz of SA) built the Civic as the Ballade only in 4dr. A special model was the 180i with the B18B4, that was fitted to Ballade models. A new bodystyle was introduced with this generation called the Civic Coupe, based from the Civic Ferio sedan, and was sold in North America, Europe and Japan. The fifth generation remains popular among tuners and racers alike.

Oil leak by the timming cover gasket

we need engine displace ment or exact honda type. ID
to answer fully.,
my guess, is the engine leaks oil and you have tried fix it
odd, you did the hard ones first. why not the valve cover
did you know there are 2 ways to find leaks.
1: clean it , all off, then run it and look. see live leak.
best is to do that with out driving as the wind blows it about.
find it , now you know what leaking.
2: use the UV dye kit.
quote wiki, but WHAT ENGINE ?????????????????
all base models were made with 1.6L engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (Honda D engine). The CX, DX, and LX all have D16y7 non-VTEC engines; whereas the EX has a D16y8 VTEC, and the HX has D16y5 VTEC-E. The USDM Si and Canadian SiR came with a DOHC (B16A2 VTEC).

first tell engine, ! DOHC is quite different.

My 96 civic 1.6 dohc vtec wont vtec any suggestions why this would happen

vtec is controlled by oil pressure so first check the oil, if it is low that can cause it. if you change your oil the way you should then the solenoid could be bad on most Hondas it is right by the oil filter.
