Thinking about a rebuild

Now if you have determined that your engine is worn out, you must make some decisions. The question of whether or not an engine is worth rebuilding is largely a subjective matter and one of personal worth. Is the engine a popular one, or is it an obsolete model- Are parts available- Will it get acceptable gas mileage once it is rebuilt- Is the car it's being put into worth keeping- Would it be less expensive to buy a new engine, have your engine rebuilt by a pro, rebuild it yourself or buy a used engine from a salvage yard- Or would it be simpler and less expensive to buy another car- If you have considered all these matters, and have still decided to rebuild the engine, then it is time to decide how you will rebuild it.
The editors feel that most engine machining should be performed by a professional machine shop. Think of it as an assurance that the job has been done right the first time. There are many expensive and specialized tools required to perform such tasks as boring and honing an engine block or having a valve job done on a cylinder head. Even inspecting the parts requires expensive micrometers and gauges to properly measure wear and clearances. A machine shop can deliver to you clean, and ready to assemble parts, saving you time and aggravation. Your maximum savings will come from performing the removal, disassembly, assembly and installation of the engine and purchasing or renting only the tools required to perform these tasks.
A complete rebuild or overhaul of an engine involves replacing all of the moving parts (pistons, rods, crankshaft, camshaft, etc.) with new ones and machining the non-moving wearing surfaces of the block and heads. Unfortunately, this may not be cost effective. For instance, your crankshaft may have been damaged or worn, but it can be machined undersize for a minimal fee.
So although you can replace everything inside the engine, it is usually wiser to replace only those parts which are really needed, and, if possible, repair the more expensive ones. Later in this section, we will break the engine down into its two main components: the cylinder head and the engine block. We will discuss each component, and the recommended parts to replace during a rebuild on each.

transmission is worn out and needs a rebuild. over time the slipping will come to 2nd and 1st gears too. the mechanical advantage is lower in the higher gears so the slipping starts there, and in climbing grades. it made it beyond ten years, its designed service life, all mechanical and living things wear out.

call transmission shops, yellow pages, and they will give you prices to remove, rebuild, and replace your transmission and you can make the call as to whether or not it is worth it.

A professional engine rebuild can cost anywhere from $500 to $1500 or more, depending on what needs to be replaced/serviced.

If you plan on doing the work yourself, you could get away with less than $200.

Whether or not it's "worth it" to fix the car or replace it, is relative. You have to remember to factor in the cost of purchasing/fixing a new car versus the one you're driving now.

Vehicle resale value should not be considered in whether or not it's "worth it" to repair a vehicle, unless you intend to repair it before selling it. The primary consideration should be the cost of fixing it versus the costs you will incur utilizing other options, such as buying new, buying used with payments, buying used outright, etc.

Keep in mind that all vehicles eventually need service, and a more expensive vehicle tends to need more expensive service procedures.

96 buick century leaking anti freeze from timeing cover

You will need to remove the timing cover and replace the gasket set. it is the timing cover gasket that is leaking and yes it is fairly common, once fixed it should not reoccur. It is not a horribly expensive repair, but mine on a 96 regal cost about $200 to have replaced. The decision is up to you as to whether it is worth it, based on your vehicles miles, and condition.

Its your decision what its worth. That isnt a half bad car, but 2 bent rods should only be fixed via a complete engine rebuild/replacement, or at the very least a known good or guaranteed used engine installed. This is not cheap, but a used engine where I live in Los Angeles can be found installed with a 90 day warranty for 800-1000 dollars, which is probably moret han worth it to save a very clean 94 lincoln if all else works well. However is some areas, you may not be able to find repairs for less tahn 2000 or more, in which case youll have to determine your budget and how much you like teh car. Personal attatchment to the car should be your primary motivating factor in deciding the value of any repair over 500 dollars. If you like it and trust it, and its been a GOOD car, always fix what you have...lemons tend to always be lemons, and good cars tend to continue to be good cars after proper repairs are performed when they do break.
