I think my tyrod may be disconnected. How can I be sure?

I assume you mean tie rod, which is part of the steering mechanism of any vehicle.

The tie rods connect the individual wheels to the steering box AKA steering sector via a ball and socket type of flexible joint.

If a tie rod is disconnected, you CANNOT STEER your car. If one is badly worn, you will experience a lot of slack (lost motion) in the steering wheel and quite likely hear a popping sound as well.

If you are unsure, consult a local mechanic before attempting to drive the car, as this could be very dangerous and lead to a crash.

How to install inner and outer tie rods on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica - I waqs told buy a trusted local mechanic that I need to replace 3 of the 4 tie rods. Might as as well replace all 4, but how hard is it to do myself? I am very mechanically inclined and would like some advice. Thanks - Sam

You will need to rent or borrow in inner tie rod tool but here are the directions.
1. Break the jam nut on inner tie rod to outer loose.
2. Remove nut from outer tie rod attaching it to steering knuckle.
3. Use hammer to get tie rod out of knuckle.
4. Unscrew outer tie rod then jam nut
5. Remove clamp from boot and slide off inner tie rod.
6. Using side cutter or hammer and chisel break off metal clamp on the inside of inner tie rod boot.
7. Using inner tie rod tool, unscrew inner tie rod from rack and pinion
8. Reinstall parts and have it aligned

Can someone tell me what Tie Rod Ends are? I've been told by my mechanic that I need to replace them. Why does the car need to be realigned when I get this service?

The tie rod is part of the steering mechanism. If you replace these they will not be exactly the same as the old ones which may have changed shape over time etc... Here is a very good site for info relating to your car and helps with all the technical stuff... http://news.carjunky.com/how_stuff_works/what-is-a-tie-rod-abc170.shtml

Any info on tie rods

You have left and right inner tie rods and outer tie rods on your car.
You also have lower ball joints which can wear loose too....not to mention the left and right struts and upper strut bearings.

A cheap (China) tie rod may last only a year.(plastic inner wear points)
A good quality tie rod may last 10.(nylon and/or metal wear points)

Too much play in the steering wheel.

well i would check the idler arm first then all tie rod ends if thats not your problem the changing the steering box isn't to difficult although you will need a tie rod end splitter to seperate it from the drag link good luck
