The gear selection illumination on

Usually this lamp can be accessed by prying off the cover or by removing cover retaining screws located on top of panel or side of console. Spend a little time exploring the console you will probably come to a revelation. Recommend using a GOOD flashlight to explore with.

2004 mercury sable gas go's

This is caused by an obstructed filler air pipe vent, this keeps the air from coming out of the tank as you fill, this causes the filler nozzle at the station to shut off as the gas backs up in the filler pipe, the air vent pipe is either kinked or blocked in some way. The vent tube runs down along side the gas fill tube and is all one part, replace it.

I have two water leaks

Can't tell is you mean engine coolant leak or passenger compartment rain leak?

The main way to find engine coolant leaks is to top up the system and then use a pressure tester to amplify it enough so that it is more visible.
Could be split hose under clamp, head gasket, etc.

Water inside could be wheel well splash, door drains plugged and door overflowing eventually, etc.
Takes 2 people and a hose to try all the possibilities.

Alternator indicator light is on

This warning light comes on when the charging system is NOT producing enough current or voltage to meet your vehicle's electrical needs. The cause may be a failed alternator or generator, a bad battery, a failed voltage regulator (if separate from the alternator), loose or corroded battery cables, or a broken or slipping drive belt. Turn the engine off and check the belt that turns the alternator. Caution: DO NOT get your fingers, clothing or tools near the belt(s) or pulleys while the engine is running.
If the belt appears to be intact and is turning the alternator, start the engine, and turn on the headlights. If the lights are dim, it verifies the charging system is not working -- probably due to a failed alternator, battery or other electrical fault.

THE EMISSION SYSTEM LIGHT IS

You can not fix anything, that produces an OBD2 light on your dash

You will need a repair shop ,that can scan your vehicles
systems, to find out what fault codes you have, and how
to proceed to a solution and repair

You can have someone with a code reader or an
auto parts store check for codes, but knowing what
they are and the technology, won't help much

Your car has many systems
It would appear it is an issue with the EVAP System

I bought a 2004 mercury

The anchor points that you describe are on all late model cars. They're made for attaching baby car seats without using seat belts. Your car should have both the anchors AND seat belts. Most likely, the lower seat belt latches have beeb pushed down into the seat. Fish around with your hand and you should find them.

Good luck.

Trying to change spark plugs.

go to a parts store, they sell two different types of puller tools which pull the boot off the plug, instead of ripping the wire out of the boot. it is 7 and if your mileage is near 100k you may want to do the plug wires also. get a real set made for the engine, not cheap universal wires.

My sable check engine light

Have the Auto parts store near you read the code for the check engine light. Most do it for free. Sounds like you may be having a misfire of one of your spark plugs. You may need a tune up.

Possible Electrical Short Or Module Malfunction

I have this same exact problem in my 2004 Mercury Sable. It seems that it causes scrapping noise in my engine though aswell. I have had it for a few months and I fix it but turning the car off after a minute or two and just restarting it. That seems to fix it but it's progressivly gotten worse.

I have a 2004 Mercury sable 24 valve. It sputters

When was last fuel filter change? For that matter when was last tune up? Seriously, sounds like fuel filter, especially this time of year. With big temperature swings condensation (water) forms in fuel tank. Run a bottle of STP gas treatment through it then change fuel filter.
