Hi and welcome to FixYa!
It can be a faulty transmission solenoid, a faulty TCM (transmission control module or can be a bad torque converter. As a first course of action, have it checked before replacing. It's wise to have them checked first than taking a wild guess on what to replace.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

HI,pbs light stays on
The ABS
light is on because you have a code stored in your ABS module. It is a
good idea to bring it to a shop that has an ABS scanner to determine the
problem. They can tell you precisely which wheel sensor is bad or which
ABS component is faulty. There is one wheel sensor at each wheel,
directly over the exciter ring at each hub. If you want to scan the code
yourself, you will need a Ford Super Star II tester or an equivalent
scan tool to access the ABS system.
Take a look at the front and rear ABS notched rotors, and make sure
they are not caked up with debris, oil or dirt because the sensors read
these notches. I’m happy to help further over the phone at

Need to know how to change a thermostat on a 1990
Doesn't sound good. Usually t-stat is on engine. Follow top radiator hose to engine should be located there behind a 2 inch dome attached by two bolts and radiator hose is attached to the dome.
Now subaru's can't handle overheating. Slightly hot as in got to red but shut off imediatly, will often blow the head gaskets. Got hotter than that will crack the heads. as in drove more than 2 miles near red mark on guage. or by adding water while hot also will crack them.
Broken fan belt? was it timing belt and bad water pump? if water pump age is unknown will need one of those too. and most likely timing belt and some pulleys.
Good news is you can't hit the valves with a broken timing belt on these cars. But the timing marks are confusing there are 5 or so on the center gear but you only use the one on the back of the pulley on a tab that is a straight line. Point it up at the mark as book shows. the other two marks are ok. Putting in the belt tensioner is testy so good luck.
Best price for all these parts are on E-bay You can save hundreds by buy the sets.
NOW REMEMBER (CHECK YOUR HEADS FOR CRACKS OTHERWISE ALL IS LOST) TOO EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE USUALLY

Car ships replaced wires plugs o2 sencer sometimes
If it acts like it is flooding while idling, but it runs fine on the road, it could be running too rich and flooding it out due to leaking injectors, bad fuel pressure regulator, or excessive fuel pressure.
I would start by replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator since it doesn't cost as much as the injectors.
Check your fuel pressure using a Fuel Pressure Check Gauge to see if the fuel pressure regulator is maintaining the proper pressure.
Vacuum is attached to the
Fuel Pressure Regulator
to control system pressure. When the fuel pressure regulator is not
functioning properly it causes the fuel pressure to be above normal
operating pressure. This condition causes excess fuel to be injected
causing a rich mixture that produces black smoke. I’m happy to help further over the phone at

Brake lights dont work but
Hello, Ok if the fuses and bulbs are good you will need to check the brake light switch this is the most common problem when fuses and bulbs are good. The switch is located under the dash, You can find it quickly by looking at the top of the brake pedal, You will notice that the brake pedal arm when depressed will make contact with the switch. You will need to take the switch off and take it to the parts store and let them test it for you unless you have a multimeter, If you do you can check the switch without removing it by placing the meter on dc volts and putting the red lead into one side of the plug and the black one on a good ground make sure the key is turned to the on position then you should have 12 volts on one side of the plug but not the other until you press down on the brake pedal then you should have voltage on both sides if you only have voltage on one side with the pedal down that means the switch is bad.. When you see the switch you will see very quickly how to take it off!!! it is simple. Good luck

1990 Legacy: speedometer not working...
The first thing you can always do is check your fuses. there might a blown fuse that need replacement. The 1990 Legacy has a mechanical speedometer . The speed sensor is a read switch in the speedometer head itself. So
if your speedometer is functioning ( needle working properly ) then the
internal read switch is defective. That requires replacing the entire
speedometer OR it can be a defective connection between the speedometer and the
ECU.If the speedometer is not working, then you can
have a defective speedometer, cable, speedometer cable adapter ( on the tranny
) or internal speedo gear in the tranny.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

I have a subaru legacy 1990 and its over heating.
I hate to say it but sound like you may have a partial blown head gasket,do you see any water on the ground or is it just evaporating, fill it all the way up (radiator) then leave the top off and then crank it up,if the water shoot up in the air bout to the top of the hood, this is a way to see if the exhaust is coming through the radiator, how is it running skipping or anything,do it steam excessively when you crank it up,out the tailpipe, like more than it use too,I hope I said something to help you.hopefully the head gasket isn't your problem thanks
