1996 Honda Prelude - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
I got a 96 honda prelude sr-v h22a1 which i have
I strongly suggest you initially concentrate on the basics. First ensure the engine is ok in all respects...
I seem to remember Honda used to use the oil light as part of the fuel safety system - if the oil light came on the fuel pump would stop. That was a long time ago but well worth looking into. You did say the oil light came on and then the engine stopped - it isn't surprising the engine stopped but it is of fundamental importance to discover why the oil light came on.
If the coil is producing sparks but the distributor is not redirecting those sparks to each cylinder there is clearly a fault inside the distributor that should be rectified. Similarly that broken knock sensor should be replaced and the fault codes in the brain recorded and erased before continuing.
Diagnosing stuff and verifying each diagnosis is a process that must be worked through systematically - you have a long, long way to go before you need to be considering a new ECU.

My 96 prelude keeps shutting off when hot. What do I do to fix it?
96's are kinda the bad year for our cars being the only obd2 4th gen preludes so for any codes over 43 you have to look it up in the '97-'01 manual. Code 65 is "Secondary Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Sensor 2)". Probable causes are an open in the secondary O2 sensor heater circuit or bad ECU. Have you tried resetting the ECU to see if it comes back? If so, you could check for loose wires coming from the secondary O2 sensor in the cat converter going to the 4 pin connector, or if you have access to another ECU I would try to substitute a known good ECU to see if that clears it up. The troubleshooting flowchart is on page 11-79 in the '97-'01 helms manual, and involves checking resistances and for continuity.
I think this could be the code I had on my '96 when I bought it. I tried replacing the secondary O2 sensor, and long story short it was the ECU. Luckily my '96 was still under the extended emmissions warranty, so Honda replaced it for free. I don't think you would be covered under the extended warranty because it was 14 years and under 150k miles. I just barely made it (within a month or 2 and 3k miles) last year.
As far as the engine sounds and rough idle, you could just need a valve adjustment. The secondary O2 sensor just checks the cat to make sure it's working right.
And all auto trans want to move forward when the brake is released.

Blue smoke in my 96 honda prelude
Blue smoke is usually an indication of oil burning. If you see blue smoke and hear a loud sound it could be a few things. The biggest being you have a hole in your block. You could also have a leak in your exhaust and be burning oil. A quick trip to a local autoparts store should answer this question. Most employees are willing to lend an ear and have experience with cars.
I recomend you dont take the car on anything other than short trips untill your problem is found and solved.

Broken lifter arm 96 honda prelude?
Interesting question. If you think a lifter arm, which I presume is also called a rocker arm, is broken, remove the valve cover and find it. All the rocker arms are visible, and should be easy to see.

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially
cold engine idle surge. (problem) RPM range of surge not stated300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)bad fuelrunning summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?) needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?1week, 1year?surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.4: bad spark.5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.why high RPM?especially?well that means it fails hot too.and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?say rpm is about 800and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

1996 honda prelude oil leak
did you check the steering pump, AC compression pump, etc or other engine components ? it could be something other than the engine.
