1997 Audi A6 - Page 5 Questions & Answers
I just bought an a6 audi 1997 on ebay.. i guess it
Buying any vehicle is an expensive proposition. Even the best techs can sometimes be fooled when buying in-person. Buying a vehicle with "built in" excuses (re-boot etc) is not a good idea.
If the vehicle does not perform correctly and is not ready to "rock and roll" when you take it. I suggest that you don't buy it. A "good deal" can quickly turn into a nightmare if there are problems. If you buy "as is" or need to have something corrected, the seller is 400 miles away and you will be on your own.
Likely you are excited about getting the car but sometimes the facts are not what you really want to hear. Been in the business a long time and would NEVER buy without looking it over and driving it.

1997AudiA6Quatro2.8L-aligning cam and crankshaft for timing belt
You must find the cam lock bar and crank lock pin to do this job properly, otherwise you can bend some valves and that becomes expensive..the front crank damper has a mark to line up with a mark on the timing cover for #1 TDC, but the cam lock bar is what aligns the cams into position. The crank lock pin is helpful but not 100% necessary...

Audi not starting
i think you have a faulty starter. If you know where the starter is. you could get someone to knock on it. when you trying to start. Works sometimes. It also could be bad connection to the fuel pump. check/listen if it get fuel. when cranking.

Creaking noise while turning
There are a few things to check out. Check your ball joints, if they have lost their grease they will creak. Also the upper strut plate can cause that. Less often, but possible is the rack assembly and the tie rod ends. This is assuming the noise is out side, IF you are hearing inside then it is a problem in the steering column.

Before you open up your airbag, you need to disconnect the battery and let it sit for, i'd say 1/2 an hour, they say 10 minutes, but better safe than an airbag in your face. Next, there should be 2 allen or torx bolts in the back of the airbag at 9 & 3 position. If you loosen those, you should be able to remove the airbag safely then, the bolts won't completely come out, the bag will just begin to lift, be careful when pulling on the bag, take care not to break the electrical connector it's plugged into.
At that ponit, un-bolt the steering wheel from the colum using that large socket that will fit. Before you remove the steering wheel, MARK IT, or else the wheel will never be stright again. After that, just keep removing bolts until you find what you are looking for.

Central locking
Probably a leak in the vacuum system or a failing vacuum pump. It's common on these cars. The locking system is driven partially by a vacuum pump (in my A4 it's in the passenger side rear corner of the trunk, below the carpeting). Most likely you'll need to replace it, but try changing the battery in your key fob first.

Code for radio
The serial number of the radio would be on a sticker ontop of the radio itself. Youll have to pull it out of the dash to get it. Post back with it for further help.
Thank you for choosing Fixya!
