1988 , that is and old car, and has EFI ,? has carb. ????? we cant guess this and 88 is transitions year. to get help , tell engine size and if carb or EFI, we cant guess. that. is this the gas engine or diesel, yes, they sold both, sigh. i guess, gasoline petrol engine. 1: gave it a tune up yet? 2: does it have spark on all cylinders? 3: Yes,1&2 does test fuel work.? runs for 3 seconds? 4: will not run on test fuel check compression , a cheap tool. 5: ok compression is good, but runs on test fuel. 6: bad fueling. fix that. Look at the starter for a short to ignition + some vehicles get there ignition voltage at the starter connection. If the problem is not there look for an ignition relay under the hood that could be stuck in the on position. Sometimes if you remove it and tap it quite hard on a solid surface it will unstick. If that works you still need to replace that relay being that it will stick again. Good luck.

did you bleed the clutch? there's a bleeder nut/bolt on the slave cylinder. have someone pump up the cluth and hold, then loosen nut/bolt and air will come out. repeat process untill pedal has resistance and good fluid coming from bleeder. make sure to top of fluid during process, if you run it dry, you have to repeat the whole process again. note, i'm assuming this due to my experince on other vechiles, never worked on an isuzu before. but had the same issue on others.
