1996 Oldsmobile 88 - Page 6 Questions & Answers
My 1996 88oldsmobile has an
The security system (VATS/Passkey) installed on these GM cars is anti-owner more than an anti-theft. There are 3 parts involved:
1) The chip-key
2) The lock cylinder
3) The TDM (aka the brain of the system)
if any of these parts fails or is even slightly malfunctioning, the car stays stuck where you are and you only get a dealer asking you about 1,000$ to fix it. And all the 3 parts have a quite short lifespan.
Way too many people got in this situation (including myself). I don't recommend any partial solution or any used parts as it would happen again way too soon to be acceptable and if it happens 100 miles from home (like it happened to me....) it's a big burden.
I finally made it to save my beloved 94 Park Avenue (with the same system that is installed in your car) with a solution that I found on the internet and that bypasses the entire factory security system, all 3 pieces altogether and you can even remove the TDM at the end and use 99c keys without chip. The product I used is at

What is the sign
Check to see if it is getting proper fuel flow with a fuel pressure gauge. Sometimes when defective fuel pumps get warm, they quit working.
What type antifreeze?
In your 96, use the Prestone Dex-Approved red-orange stuff
. but when you go to buy coolant ask them at the store or auto parts store. but cars requiring dex-cool all gm"s 95 to date.
I have no tail lights
most likely a blown tail light fuse. look under dash on drivers side for fuse panel. if the top covers gone that tells you location of fuse, you may have to pull them all one at a time to find the blown one. you may be lucky and have an owners manual in glove box if so, then it will have fuse location in that manual. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com
Upon taking foot off accelerator to step on brake
The olny related to the brakes that has anything to do with the engine is the vacuum booster control unit.It uses engine vacuum to give the brakes the power assist. Its a large vacuum line from the intake maniflod to the booster unit. If the booster unit is leaking internaly you could have enough vacuum lose to stall the engine
Car bucks sometimes while driving on freeway
Hello Richard
These models and other similar Gm cars had issues with spark plugs developing carbon tracking down the outside section of porcelain insulator. Usually on the front three plugs. If you see these black streaks on the plugs, replace them and the ignition wires as well. If you don't do the wires it will happen again.
The spark when the car is under load on the highway will follow this track down the outside part of the plug rather than jumping the gap on the end of the plug resulting in the bucking you are speaking of.
Also it could be the beginning of ignition coil failure.
To check this out you can spray a little water mixed with dish soap on the ignition wires, spark plugs and coils. This water will help show up a weak point in the ignition system as the water is a conductor.
When the water hits the weak point your car will begin to chug and misfire. If it is dark enough you also may see the spark jumping.
I hope this helps you pinpoint your problem.

Engine light stays on,wont go off,and car cuts out
When you have a service engine light it means the computer of your vehicle
has detected a problem. The easiest and simplest thing to do is to go
to your local parts store and most of them will hook up their computer
to your vehicle and they will pull or read your codes for you free. Post
the codes they find on here and we can help you diagnose your problem
or lead you in the right direction for a repair.

Where is the water pump
Hello: The waterpump is on the passenger side of engine. Either the heater hoses are leaking or the waterpmp shaft seals or the radiator hose that attaches to the waterpump. The waterpump is located about in the center, its pulley does not have groves and the pulley is held on the waterpump with 4 10mm bolts.
I need the brake caliper
Go to online of autozone and they have step by step and specs for almost all models and makes. May have to register.

P0107 map sensor circuit low- the map sensor sends signal to computer for control of fuel injection, it's on firewall side of engine, above right valve cover(firewall side) little black rectangular box with 3 wire connector and a vacuum line hooked to it. if it's vacuum line is ok -there is another connection at other end of hose/plastic tube make sure that vaccum supply to sensor is good, if it is, sensor probably bad can check out but not outside a shop or a computer diagnostics. if vacuum supply is good i'd probably just try a sensor
1996 Oldsmobile fuel pump in
if you dont care about springing for parts then i would try a new relay switch first and if that doesnt solve your problem then replace the fuel pump itself, but seeing as its a 96 and depending how many miles it has on it it could just be the fuel pump itself, i would be able to help alot more if you could be more specific, eg. how many miles on car, specific problem, will it start, does it stall etc.
My AC , Horn, and radio... all come on or go off
You mean the horn blows anythime? For the a/c and radio I would ck the ignition switch, the horn may need a horn pad. See if you can barely touch the horn pad and see if the horn blows. If so the pad is bad.
My '96 olds 88 royale
Its a EGR Valve( exhaust gas recirculation) that is an emmisions device it recirculates exhaust gases back thru the engine to be burnt again to make the engine run cleaner and to help cool the combustion chamber...If the valve sticks and exhaust gases are going back into the enging at the wrong time that would cause your concern..sometimes you can remove and clean the EGR VALVE and ports.and sometimes you will have to replace the valve Hope this helps Good Luck
