1996 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight - Page 2 Questions & Answers
My oldsmobile stalls and dies on me while driving.
Have you checked the electrical system, battery voltage, alternator after removing the belt and spark plug cables?
Look for any damaged or cracked cables that can short the current going to the plugs.
Codes P0401 and P0441 on a 1996 98 Olds
P0401--- the egr valve has insufficient air flow. Needs to be taken off and cleaned, if not replaced. The port holes might be clogged up, or the valve itself might be bad.
P0441---- The evaporative emission control purge valve has low air flow, probably do to the egr valve.
If you take off the egr valve, you will need to replace the gasket, or it won't seal right when it's put back on.
My spedomoter and transmission works sometimes,
Before we get crazy with testing how old and in what condition is the battery and charging system? Most of the items that are giving you problems are electric(not sure about speedometer is it digital?) regardless the transmission that makes it register is. Start with electrical system then we will take it from there.
Keep me posted.

Where do you change the flasher on a 1996
On the 1996 Olds LS. It was located on the back side of the fuse box. In
other words the fuse box is located just under the left side of the
steering column. It is exposed so you can access the fuses through a
small plastic cover. But you can't access the flasher this way. You
have to remove the whole plastic panel that runs in front of the
steering column just under the dashboard. I removed three screws and
lowered the panel to access the flasher. It's going to be "resting" in a small
area on the backside of the fuse box. It was very simple to remove the
existing flasher and plug in the new one. The operation from start to
finish took about 10 minutes. Good luck and hope this helps.
Losses power when accelerate to power up to gain
Hi. I can help you. there are several possible causes. Begin by changing the fuel filter and the air filter. these are two inexpensive possibilities that will often cure the problem you are experiencing. If that doesn't solve your problem get back.
I put in a new starter and it still won't turn
The ignition switch controls the voltage to the starter solenoid. Check the fuses for the ignition. When the switch is turned to "start" you should see +12 on the starter solenoid connection. If not (and you won't based on your description) potential issues are neutral safety switch or the ignition switch itself.
If there is any alarm system on the car this could interfere as well.
Lights come on and off after the motor is off
FOr now this is my suggestion. When they come on go raise the hood and perform a wiggle test.Yes wiggle the wires while someone watches if the light go out.
Don't rush! do one area at a time or you can miss where the cause of the porblem is.
If you don't find it go inside the car under the dash and do the same thing, only be very specfic moving as few aires as possible, this will take a lot of time.do it on the weekend.
Failed inspection due to codes P0336 and P0442
PO336 IS THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WHICH SHOULD BE THE ANSWER TO PASSING INSPECTION SINCE IT IS A PERFORMANCE ISSUE. IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FUEL INJECTION AND SPARK PULSE. REPLACING IT SHOULD HELP TO REDUCE EMISSIONS. AND THE SECOND CODE IS AN EVAP LEAK,SMALL. HOPE THIS HELPS. LET ME KNOW. BEST OF LUCK
