It keeps rebooting but successfully reboots ?

One thing you can try is to set it so it does NOT reboot on errors

I have bought mcafee total protection 2011 and I have been unable to install it on my computer

Please try to boot to safe mode, then install mcafee total protection 2011on your system.
Go to "Start," "Control Panel" then "Add or Remove Programs." If the McAfee Antivirus Software is there, you will need to select "Change." The directions will allow you to put on the updated version. For a new product, follow the next step.
Place the CD into the appropriate drive. Select the installation button so that the program will load into the computer.
Restart the computer after the installation. Following the directions given, select the options you want to make your program user-friendly for your use.
Enable the system to select specific times to automatically scan your computer for viruses.
Start your computer to enable all of your changes to take effect.

Virus protection programs such as Nortons and McAfee can be purchased from the computer shop.
There are free virus programs you can downloaf off the Internet. The one I like is AVG, click on this link to their WEB site :-

Virus?

Firstly, the most important thing you can do is keep up-to-date virus protection-either a paid program like "Mcafee" or a free version, (which I'm not sold on but better than nothing)like AVG.....available here:
http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

Ad/spyware blockers are important tohave as well.

How long ago did the problems start? a day or 2?
You could first try system restore.
"start", "all Programs", Accessories", "System tools", System Restore", "Restore My Computer to an Earlier time", and select a date before your troubles occurred...note that this WILL remove any PROGRAMS or UPDATES you have downloaded in the meantime, but NOT any files that you have created or docs you have edited, pictures added, etc.
Hopefully "system restore" is on and hasn;t been disabled by whatever is causing your problem (which is often the case).
If this works...great...go update your antivirus, etc.
If Not, try booting in safe mode...."Restart", and hold "F8" as soon as the screen goes black for the reboot, select "safe mode" and try running a virus scan from this mode.
You colud also try downloading (in regular mode) something like "spybot searcvh and destroy" to try and find your Problem> You can get it here:

Hope this helps...good luck ;)

The problem has been a series of smaller problems which progressively resulted in a lock or freeze. The few times it does not freeze, a screen flashes on selling a Spyware protection. I think my husband...

Try starting your computer in safe mode and do a virus scan once in safe mode. While in safe mode Windows only loads the basic devices to run your computer and usually viruses are not loaded untill windows starts in regular mode. Don't panic once you are in safe mode and your screen looks all grainy, this is normal.
  1. Restart your computer and press F8 as soon as you turn it on.
  2. Click the "safe mode with networking" option
  3. Update your antivirus
  4. Do a full system scan
  5. Restart your computer and hope for the best.
If that doesn't work, than reinstall windows.
If you need further assistance, let me know.
Avast is the best free antivirus there is. google it, install it, and enjoy your computer again.Another option is to reinstall windows. If you have the cd that came with the computer than put it in the cd rom and restart your computer and follow onscreen instructions.

Computer locked up and can't get into anything

Try starting in safe mode and remove the offending program.

  1. Start the laptop
  2. After the Dell Screen vanishes begin pressing F8
  3. You will get a Windows Startup Screen
  4. Select SafeMode and press enter twice
  5. Windows should load up
  6. Go into Control Panel Add Remove Programs
  7. Remove the anti virus software and anything else you suspect maybe causing grief.
  8. Restart the laptop normally and see what happens.
  9. Hopefully by now you will be able to go back and do the factory imaging.
