I have a 1998 Johnson 130 hp outboard motor. Have already taken lower unit off but can't get it apart. Is there a secret to taking the lower unit apart? I would like to have a diagram.

What is the mix ratio for a Johnson outboard motor?
Any Johnson outboard motor built since 1964 requires a 50/1 fuel ratio. Motors built prior to that date require a 32/1 ratio, with the exception of a few fishing motors built prior to 1955 that use a 16/1 ratio.
outboard motor manufacturers supply a long shaft leg for just this problem
Talk with your Johnson dealer and check used outboards on e bay
Lowering the whole motor may affect the boat and floatation aspects besides making it harder to steer and start
Plossibly clogged intakes (grim in intakes) or thermostats not opening. I would suggest pulling the lower unit and then your thermostat housing and use a water hose to back-flush it out. Also check the thermostats in boiling water to make certain opening.
Completely remove the lower shift shaft coupler bolt to separate the assemblies. It is a snug fit, so be deliberate in your straight pull-out of the gear case.
put into nuetral, undo the five bolts around lower unit, take off sideplate halfway down leg casing, loosen the two bolts clamping the gear rods together, then lower unit should slide down[if driveshaft isnt stuck in the crankshaft spline].assembly is reverse, but take care putting water tube back into rubber grommet, and tighten gear rod clamp only after making sure that g/box is in nuetral, when gear lever also in nuetral,or matched together
if you haven't fixed this already, take the pastic water pick up covers off there are two joiner nuts in there undo them, there is a plastic cone on each end take them off and it will slip through. I own the same model and year outboard.

Hey BK, Its still the carburetor!.... take it to a qualified professional.. there are TOO many tiny passages and jets that must be perfectly clean for a small engine to run properly..
