Nikon coolpix S6000 won't focus

To focus lightly press the shutter button (the one that takes pictures). Pushing it half way tells the camera to focus. When you're ready push it the rest of the way in and it should take a nice crisp photo. If not there's a problem. Take it to a repair shop, replace it, just rely on your smartphone, or learn to deal with blurry pictures. I'd personally go with the smartphone as you always need it anyway.

Have you tried checking if the battery door is completely shut and flush with the body of the camera? Try cleaning the contacts where the batteries touch and make sure that there isn't any dust or dirt obstructing the plates. If your camera still doesn't turn on, the battery has probably short-circuited or fried. You can easily order another one for under $10 via Amazon here:
Good luck.

I was taking pictures with my new Nikon coolpix s6000 and it died. When I plugged it in it just said battery exhausted!

A newly bought camera is not necessarily fully charged. Read instructions about first charging. Enjoy your camera.
