H p F1903 monitor comes on normal looking for about 3 seconds then goes black repeat turning it on and it does the same thing

faith1114, Try this first! See if any thing seems a little similar to your f1903 type of complaint. Problem been around a long time!!! After doing some reading there, you will be in a better position to make decision to DIY repair, contract out the repair work, trade in for new , DIY repair + buy a new monitor keeping refurbished f1903 as emergency spare. Here is a little clue. If unit can display Win-desktop for 2 seconds and then the "black screen of death happens" you certainly need to do some reading and viewing of DIY videos at YOUTUBE so you can understand the big problem all major CCFL back-lit lcd monitor manufacturers are facing. do some additional reading here at fixya in the profiles of ccfl backlit lcd monitor technicians "budmrtn" "buddymc" , "12fixlouie" (late) "louie12fix" (old) Follow links you find there. Once you understand basic problem you will never walk past the new curlie-Q, screw-in energy-efficient CFL light bulbs at the local hardware or big box homecenter ever again with out having a slight grin on your face!! I was given a faulty f1703 by someone as it was out of warranty, had no help from HP and bought another brand replacement.

Same problem everyone else seems to be having. Press the on button, came on for a second or so and then went blank. Press button again, turn on again and the same happened.

I managed through trying time and again after pressing on to quickly press menu, then go down to Factory settings, press select, go down to Yes and press select again. This reset to the Factory settings and it seems to be working okay. Been like this now for about a week. I don't know how long it will last - if it goes again will try re-soldering. Guess I won't be buying HP products as this was a part of a very expensive system.

Try it on another PC to narrow down the problem. If does the same on another PC, then you need to open it up and inspect inside the unit, first thing to look for will be capacitors with bulging top/seal or leaking, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

If it was the power supply, the light would change to amber (orange) and then turn green again when it comes back on. Look closely at the screen when the it looks to turn off. See if you can still see an image. It may be hard to see, but when the backlights go bad or fail, the actual lcd screen itself still functions and you can see a very faint image. Maybe moving the mouse in circles might help you to be ablt to see. If you cant see anything at all, then it may be a bad board inside the unit.

You have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of he monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix he problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm You can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictues and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and - connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the new one the same way. sure the F1903
is a LCD monitor but is old , it has
and CCFL black lamp.
it has board inside that is the power supply /inverter
this board runs the lamps.
the lamps love to fail after 10 long year of service
so when monitor fails, push the menu botton on the front
is the OSD menu dead (monitor brains inside)???

see bottom of this page , see CCFL and PCB there?
if lamps bad replace them
if PCB bad replace it, seen sold on Ebay , vastly, there.

have silly internal sleep mode,
turn that off. (push menu button on front)
see OSD (on screen,display menus)
see settings
see power saver mode, turn it OFF,

HP's are known for bad capacitors in the power supply.
Replacing them is simple if you know how..not so simple if you don't.
Try your local TV repair centre. It should not cost alot to have the capacitors replaced.
