Memorex MP3126 Cassette/CD Boombox Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 15, 2011

I have memorex radio/cd/cassette player model MP3226. The PLAY button on the cassette tape does not stay in the down position when pressed when a tape is in the housing. If I remove the tape, and press the PLAY button, it goes down and stays in the ON position until I press the stop button. I tried several different cassette tapes and the same thing happens. I have the unit apart and really don't see anything broken parts. Can someone please let me know what could possibly be causing the problem. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Lisa

Hi, I posted the following message a couple of months ago and I would like further assistance is its okay with you.

    Here is my original post:

"I have memorex radio/cd/cassette player model MP3226. The PLAY button on the cassette tape does not stay in the down position when pressed when a tape is in the housing. And your response was: " I can imagine 2 cases for your problem:
Either there is a mechanical problem and something is not allowing the "play mechanism" to go all the way up to the clip position when the cassette is in the housing,
Or the tape isn't rolling up properly. Some of these deck's have some kind of protection and when the tape isn't rolling properly a system stops the play procedure. Check if both of the rollers for the tape are spinning around properly. In case of not spinning, run the cassette fast speed forward and backward in order to come to the proper state. Also check without any cassette is any roller spinning around or not?

In case of a problem or clarification or further details needed, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.

I did the following check so far. The rewind and forward button work good without a tape inserted. When I insert a tape, the rewind and forward button work just fine. The flows forward and reverse without any problems. As soon as I press the Play button when the tape is inserted, the button does not wanna stay down in that position. And if I force hold the play button down, the tape begins to roll up on the roller on the upper left part of the tape housing. Any other suggestions what to look for. Thank you. I am not the type to give on something unless I know everything has been looked at. Thanks again Lisa

    Hello,
Thanks for responding back to me. Well, I found what the problem was in regards to why the play button did not stay engaged while tape was inserted. Now, I am not good with part names, but the piece that I found was bent. It's the part where it sits vertical and there is a white cap on the bottom on it and when the play button is engaged, that piece slides downward on the tape where it seems to push the tape itself down a bit - is that the capstan part you were talking about? If not, what part would that be called? I read your previous posts over and over so what I did then was, I had another cassette player and took it apart and went piece by piece to see what happens when the play button is pressed and that is how I found out that part was bent. Your posts helps as well.

Now my next problem is, now that the tape plays, I have to turn the volume way up (almost to m ax. volume) to hear the music from the tape itself. But if I put the radio on, the volume level runs normal. What is causing the volume problem on the tape playing? Thanks Lisa

From your latest description about the problem I can see that the pitch roller doesn't touch the capstan (with the tape in between). I insist on mechanical problem, especially when a cassete is inserted in the player. At normal usage the pitch roller force the tape onto the capstan (with a special amount of force) and after this the whole system comes to the "lock position". Double check that there is nothing to block the movement, especially a part of the plastics of the cassete.

Unable to to dub from the radio, phono,or cd

As far as I know, you need to press Record button to record from external source. If you press Dub, it will start Dubbing from Tape-A to Tape-B. You might be need to press Record and later press Pause or Play to start recording.
