Tv works for an hour or so and then the picture shrinks and distorts and then shuts off. A day later I can operate the tv and the same event occurs. Is the power supply defective ? Can it be replaced ?

Based on what you described I would say your TV has the "shrinking and expanding" fault. Its a common problem on that model and the symptoms can range from the video shrinking and expanding or no video or no audio....You can read more about this fix on the site www.TvRepairKits.com
try to resoldered small parts inside, go to power section hot and cold! resoldered it.. then go to jungle ic resoldered all pin of them, and other small parts around at the IC.
Open the TV amd turn it on in a position you can see the picture, possibly through a mirror. Now gently tap all of the metal heat sinks on the circuit board until you find the one that is sensitive it will have a small chip mounted vertically on it, with probably like 7-10 pins. The number on the chip will most likely be an "LA****" number. Now turn the circuit board (UNPLUG FIRST) over and resolder the pins. This is your problem 99% of the time. Be very careful there is High Voltage inside this TV.
