I have an over-the-range microwave. When cooking on the stove surface, as steam hits the microwave, it will suddenly turn on. Occasionally you can reset, but usually has to be unplugged to make it work again. Model number is JVM 1650 0SH05

That will be caused by condensation affecting the controls of the microwave oven. Not a lot can be done about that except cut down on the steam maybe or wait for the temperature to rise slightly avoiding the condenation problem.

The vent will turn on randomly and not turn off!

Most over the range microwaves have a heat safety system built into them. If for instance you are cooking on the stove top for a long period of time on the burner directly under the micro control panel and the control panel get too hot, a thermostat in the microwave will automatically turn on the vent fan to help keep the control panel cooled off. My guess is that the safety thermostat (usually right behind the bottom of the control panel) may be going bad and needs replaced.

HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY OVER THE STOVE SAMSUNG MICROWAVE. LOOKED UP ALL THE ANSWER'S AND CHOOSE THE ONE I THOUGHT BEST AND EASIEST. ITS A MOISTURE (STEAM) PROBLEM FROM COOKING ON THE STOVE. TAKE THE TOUCH PAD APART (AFTER UNPLUGGING AND FINDING THE VIDEO ON U-TUBE THAT SHOWS YOU HOW TO DO IT) ITS EASY. I JUST TOOK THE RIBBON (MINE IS GREEN) SEPARATED IT FROM IT SELF AND PLACED A PIECE OF PAPER IN BETWEEN SO THEY DON'T TOUCH. HAD TO DO IT TWICE BECAUSE I DID NOT SEPARATE THEM DOWN FAR ENOUGH. I ALSO BUT A PIECE OF FOAM IN THE PANEL UNDERNEATH THE CIRCUIT BOARD BECAUSE OF THE HUGE GAP FOR STEAM TO GET IN. IT'S LASTED 4 MO, THAN STARTED FLASHING SE OCCASIONALLY BUT BY OPENING THE DOOR AND PUSHING STOP ITS FINE. THIS HAPPENS MAYBE ONCE A WEEK. I THINK IF I GO BACK IN AND RE-SEPARATE THE RIBBON IT WOULD STOP AGAIN BUT IT'S REALLY NOT ENOUGH TO BOTHER ME. GOOD LUCK

Kenmore elite microwave

Was it just the exhaust fan that came on? If so this is normal when cooking on the stove for long period of time without the fan running. The heat builds up under the microwave and eventually activates the fan.

Vent fan wont turn off

Steve,

The vent fan is thermostat controlled to protect the control panel. Once the panel temp drops, this will turn off by itself. This is normal for this to occur when your steaming and cooking for a long time. Good Luck

May Spacemaker XL1800 stop heating food. Was working fine. Then just stop

Is this an over the stove type unit? I have had a few problems with my over the range spacesaver. I think the heat from cooking gets up into the microwave and damages it. The steam from me boiling things on the stove had mine quit heating and I purchased a new one. The parts to replace the faulty ones can be quite expensive over $150.00, so its better to purchase a new microwave.

My LG over the range microwave doesn't heat any more

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.
That said, you can get free estimates on the cost of a repair but you should also consider a replacement which may be a better option for you.

What they do not tell you about over the stove microwaves is that they are constantly deteriorating due to the steam, oil, and other cooking fumes from the stove below. As a result, their life expectancy is definitely diminished.

Acceptable distance from cook top surface to microwave?

Sorry but your subject line got cut off. I'll assume you're talking about the distance from the cooktop to the top of the microwave (bottom of the cabinet to which it's mounted).

Here's how the installation instructions spec it:
  • "Make sure the bottom edge of the cabinet that will be above the microwave oven is at least 66" from the floor and 30" from the cooking surface."
So it's measured from the cooktop to the top of the microwave, not the bottom edge.

And I always recommend that you use the vent fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls and door panels.

You can also download your owner's manual form the link I posted above.

Shuts itself off mid cooking cycle -- as if unplugged; then after 5 minutes or so turns itself back on as if it was just plugged in (forgetting all previous settings)

If you just put the fan blade back on, it will almost certainly fall off again.

The best bet is to slightly rough up the contact area of the shaft with sandpaper and use a little super glue to hold the blade assembly on the shaft, and let it set a few minutes before using it.

I always recommend that you use the hood vent exhaust fan when cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

Samsung MU3250W Shut down

It could have been steam or humidity.

If this is an over the range model, be sure you always use the hood vent exhaust fan when you're cooking on the stove top.

Whether it's a counter top or over the range top, always be aware that the cooling fan is running when it's cooking.

When in doubt feel for air flow through the vents.

Good luck.
