If the microwave has been in storage or not used for a long time, parts may have corroded inside. Even though it worked for a while the parts may have worn faster. Other problems could be a dry joint, (but this often causes intermittent problems). Small bugs may have gotten inside and been fried across circuitry or moisture may have also caused a short.

Replace the magnetron, safety fuse and diode as a set and check the door interlock switches.
That should get it working for another year or so.
Don't forget microwave mains fuses are special sand filled and semisurge type.
