Try disconnecting it shutting down your computer do a restart once your computer is up and running again plug the storage drive back in it may look for a driver for it or just start working you can check it by going to my computer left click then you will see it if it installed. If not leave plugged in and hit the power cord on the drive or unplug the drive again and back in if it will not start up it is time for a funeral for it. Last resort is go to devices see if the device is listed if so it may have a ? mark by it or a yellow symbol if this is the case insert the CD that came with it and hit update driver be sure to always check go on line as well for drivers. It is either a driver issue or a power issue or a bad storage device. John

Maxtor 3100 200GB hard drive clicks rythmically but not recognized by computer and cannot be accessed. About 3 -4 years old

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

My Maxtor 3100 no longer powers up. Any ideas for

Have you checked the Power Adapter of the Maxtor 3100?
- If the Power Adapter is defective and won't give power try to change the power adapter with the same specs.
- If the power adapter is good, then the board in your maxtor 3100 is defective.
- Now buy new enclosure for your Maxtor 3100 because the HDD in it is IDE.

Maxtor 3100 external drive

If the computer is connected to the power line, even if it is shutdown, you probably have in the BIOS settings the option to power it on from external sources like LAN, USB etc that is turned ON. So the USB port are still powered hence the external HDD is powered also.
