Want to change a maxtor 3200 from windows format to apple mac

When you plug the drive, once mounted on the mac, go to applications>utilities>disk utilities then select the drive and choose partition. If you want the drive to be bootable you should then choose Mac OS Extended (journaled).

Recently purchased a Mac. Unable to transfer data or videos. Is Maxtor 3200 compatible with Mac?

Macs can read NTFS format used by PC's, but not write to it.

You will have to take all your stuff off the drive, reformat it on the mac, and then you will be able to read/write to it. But PC's won't be able to read it anymore, unless they install some special drivers

PC/Mac compatability issues

Hi
Is it formatted in NTFS? OSX will read most formats but cannot write to NTFS.
I would suggest that you copy all your files from the drive on to the Mac then use disk utility to reformat the drive in the native Mac format and then copy everything back again.
You may find that once formatted, Time machine will pop up and ask if you want to use the drive as your time-machine back-up. If the drive is the same size as the Mac's drive (or smaller) I would say NO and get a larger drive to use for TM.
If you need to connect the drive to a windows machine at all then don't use the native format (HFS+), use FAT instead. The mac can work with that (although it will probably mess up your files names).

Maxtor basics personal storage 3200 Mac user

accidentally posted the solution as a comment..

but anyway I found the solution here:http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SATA_Troubleshooter_-_Mac_OS_X_Installation_Basics&vgnextoid=a0a44a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD#storage

but short version of it all:
Basicallyyou just need to format the drive by selecting it on the left in diskutility. Then select the erase tab. Then change MS-DOS (FAT) to Mac OSExtended. Finish by clicking erase.

Mine didn't work at first even though I plugged it in but after I did that it worked. Hope you can get yours working too!
