GE Model JBP26WOB1WW Broil works oven doesn't

When I turn the knob to bake, the cleaning light comes on and the oven doesn't heat. If I turn it to broil, it works fine.

  • Anonymous Jul 11, 2008

I was wrong. The broil doesn't work either. The cleaning light comes on for both positions. I tried running it through the clean cycle again and saw that both elements do work through the cleaning cycle. This did not fix my problem though. The cleaning cycle light still comes on when I turn it to oven or broil.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!! Thanks to Tom at [email protected]. He help me through this problem that seems to be unsolved everywhere that I read it. He gave me instructions to check the door latch assembly. When I opened the plate to check it out I saw that mice had moved the insulation around in there. The insulation was in between the latchmicro switch making the oven think that the door was locked when it actually was not. I hope this solution will help others. It took me two weeks to figure this out....AND thank you TOM!

Most likely the oven ignitor is bad or weak.  You can look at it and see how it compares to the broil ignitor.  If you see a whitish color on the ignitor and if it doesn't fully glow then it needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: My oven won't heat

First you will need to verify if the igniter is coming on for the oven burner when the oven is turned on. You will need to remove the oven bottom cover. There is usually two screws at the back bottom of the oven compartment that holds the bottom on. If there are no screws then it should just lift out. You may need to slide the bottom away from you then lift from the back. You will need to remove the oven racks to make enough room to lif the bottom out. Once removed you should be able to see the burner(you may also need to remove a heat spreader on the burner). Now turn on the oven and watch for the hot surface igniter to start to glow. If it does then you will need to make sure the gas orfice and venturri for the burner are not plugged with debris. You can use a small can of compressed air to try and dislodge any debris. Then give the oven gas valve a light tap with a screwdriver or a wrench. Oven gas valve is usually located at the bottom of the oven. Remove the bottom storage compartment to reach it. If you tap it and the burner comes on there may have just been debris in the valve and you may have cleared it. Then turn the oven off and back on completely several times. If the burner comes back on you should be ok if it does not then it could be a weak hot surface igniter or a bad olven gas control valve. Now going back to the start if the igniter does not come on you will need to verify if the igniter is getting voltage. If it is then test the igniter with a ohm meter. The reading should usually be between 500 to 700 ohms. A common problem with hot surface igniters is that they will crack. Examine the igniter for any visible cracks. If the igniter is not getting voltage then you will need to verify that all wires are properly connected and none have come loose. Look for any melted wires from the self cleaning process. You may need to dis-assemble the back of the range to see if any wires have come loose or melted. Now I need to stress to you that safety is important. Be very careful performing these procedures. You can get shocked or possible burned.

SOURCE: Oven's bake funktion does not work

Hi,You need to replace the oven igniter. You will find that this is a very common problem with that model and other models that use this igniter. It is very simple to do.
Look inside the oven and you will find 2 screws at the bottom of the oven in the back. Loosen them up and remove the bottom panel of the oven.
Remove the broiler, and oven trays and it is a 10 minute swap out. Removing the above items allows you the access needed to get to the two screws that mount the oven igniter to the burner.
Using either a socket (1/4") or a nut driver, remove the 2 screws and unplug the igniter. The most difficult part of the exchange is unplugging the igniter. The plastic will most likely break because it has become very brittle by being exposed to the heat. Be careful to break only the part that is being replaced.
If you do happen to break the fittings, they can be replaced with any male/female connector. If you need to replace this, I recommend that you stay away from plastic encased plugs.
You then install the ingiter, plug it in, and you are back in business. It is a very simple part to replace, but it is costly.
Thanks and take care

Oven won't heat.

Good Afternoon Gwen - Try reprogramming the range by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker off. Wait approximately ten minutes and turn the unit back on. If issue persists, then the unit could possibly be experiencing an issue with a wiring failure, EOC (electronic oven control), sensor probe and/or faulty bake or broil element. I would strongly recommend consulting a professional to narrow down the precise issue before investing in parts that may or may not be the root cause.

My oven wont heat up?

Hello there:
first chevck to see if the broil feature will work but if both the broil and bake feature does not work meaning it will not heat up if you have selected either the bake or broil follow these solutions that i have provided for you .
It won't bake or broil If neither the bake nor the broiler heating elements heat, but the range burners still work, the clock may be set for a timed or self-cleaning cycle. Check to be sure the clock buttons and knobs are set properly. If your clock has a knob that says "push for man(ual)", push the knob in and try the baking and broiling elements again. If it still does not operate properly, you probably have a defect in the thermostat, selector switch, or common wiring. If the oven does not have a separate bake/broil/etc. selector switch, the problem may be with the thermostat. But it's not easy to check the selector switch or thermostat for proper operation. If you suspect a problem in this area, call a qualified appliance repair technician.

Broiler element comes on when "bake" is pressed

does the bake element come on at all?
if so, try the oven out. do a bake @ 350 allow it to pre-heat, and see if once the pre-heat is comlete, id the broil shuts off.
on many ovens at the beginning of the cycle during pre-heat both bake and broil elements are powered.

other than that it may be a control board, or a burnt and crossed wire in the harness.

Ge gas oven will not heat but burners work

You will need to check the bake and broil igniters and/or the temperature sensor. A multi-meter should come in handy to verify if these components are good or bad.

I can't get oven to work on broil or bake; only self-cleaning.

Hello
Welcome to Fixya
My name is Huum,

Try turning the breaker off for 5 minutes and see if this resets the system.
if not you may have a defective Control board and you will need to have a HANDS on tech to diagnose these parts to be sure! They will have the diagnose equipment !

Err on display when I try to set the bake temperature

Usually, when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake element is burned out. The bake element is the black, pencil- thick tube at the bottom of the oven. When the oven heats, the element glows red. This element has an expected life-span of several years. It may last for only one; it may last for many more. When the element burns out, you need to replace it.
or try doing this
1. Turn the clock selector knob to OFF
2. “Tweak” the oven control by turning the clock selector knob slightly to the left (counter clockwise). This may stop the flashing message/beeping and clear the display window.
