I have the button hole foot on and I put down the presser foot...when I push the error to sew, I get an E3 error message. The foot is down, however!

Assuming that the presser foot lifter is working, this shouldn't be a fatal error. The presser foot has to be down to sew. The lifter needs to be in the down position to put the foot down.

Hi,
Try taking your presser foot off and lower the presser foot lever. Does the error code go away? The machine won't sew without the presser foot to hold the fabric down, but without threading the needle, will the machine run without the presser foot? Now try the standard presser foot (usually J ) and if you get the error code then the sensor at the top of the presser foot assembly is out of adjustment. Without knowing more about your machine this is all I can suggest.

have you got a buttonhole lever on the sewing machine that has to be pulled down first before starting the buttonhole?

1. Make sure you pull the buttonhole lever down- left back of your machine.
2. Select the button hole icon, or select the corresponding number for a button hole-very important.

that presser foot with that black thing that is just flopping around... well when the presser foot is down that thing should be locked into the side hole. when you have the presser foot up, put it into the side hole, fiddle with it, move it around til you find that hole, then drop the presser foot it should be locked on it now. That T presser foot needs that.

some machines have a presser foot sensor or switch which prevents the machine sewing if the foot is not down.

if your presser foot is down and you still cannot sew the switch or switch actuator is most likely damaged. you will require a tech to repair this.

Just pull down on the original metal foot. It will snap off and then you can snap on the button hole foot. Good luck!

I have a different model with the same problem. It started after I took the cover off to fix something else. After I screwed the cover back on, I kept getting the E1 message even when the foot was already down. I took the cover off again, and I found that there is a metal tab at the top left of the front cover, that is pushed by a metal tab in the back that moves when you put the presser foot up or down. You can see this metal tab moving in the back if you put the foot up and down with the cover off. Just putting the foot down(I think) before putting the cover back on fixed it so one metal tab is on the correct side of the other metal tab.

This happened to me and I eventually realized that there is a small door flap at the top near the "4" in the threading series that can get stuck open. Normally this flap goes up and down with the presser foot, but if it gets stuck open even when the presser foot is down, tapping it or closing it manually will make the error go away.
