My son as been on my laptop,when switched on i just get screensaver no start menu or anything .he tells me he thinks he as changed the bios settings? i have done f8 and tried safe mode nothing happens i get a message operating system not found.i am a beginner and do not understand computer jargon any help will be greatly appreciated.my laptop is an advent 7098
Let me start by saying, this message is usually an indicator that the hard drive has failed and needs replacing. Sometimes you can get away with an operating system reload, but more often is hard drive replacement.
To check the bios settings, you will need to enter the bios at start up. There will be a screen that tells you which button to press (usually F2) in order to go into the bios or utility set up. Some machines don't give you much time to do this, so you'll need to be quick. When in the bios, check to see if the hard drive is enabled, if there is that option, some don't have the option.
If the hard drive crashed or failed it wasn't your son's fault, it would have crashed no matter who was using it at the time. Hard drives do this, they have a small electrical motor in them, and just like the starter on your car, they work or they don't, and will fail without warning.

Go to start and type "Screen or Screensaver" it should bring up a choice in the grey menu. Click is and go to Timer and add you time. Or scroll the bar till it says NO screensaver

click on the windows menu, u see a column that says "start search" .... type in the word webcam, it leads you directly to the webcam then you can operate it..
Angle the screen to the light. If you can see a faint screen image then it's probable that the backlight's inverter has either failed, it's cable has become damaged or the backlight has failed. Both of these can be tricky to replace unless you have the right tools, but can be done provided you can get a spare. Usually it's a tech job.
If the image is not there then it's either the screen itself, the graphics chip or, more likely, the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard.
You can rule out the graphics chip by plugging the laptop into a monitor.
Of course, the ultimate problem is that you've bought an Advent laptop! And most techs agree that Advent produce the worst laptops in the world. :(
from the black widows screen, hit ctrl-alt-delete. This will bring up a menu. Choose task manager, the file...run. In the run box type restore. From the box that comes up choose rsttui.exe. This is the windows restore utility. Follow the steps to restore your system, choose a date from before the issue started happening.
P. 23 of your manual will tell you how to access the screensaver option from the menu of the player. Go to RCA's website if you are missing the manual.
