Washer not spinning or tumbling. Seems to add water ok and the pump works. I watched the motor and it doesn't turn (I took the belt off & still doesn't turn). I can turn the motor shaft & it seems ok (no bearing failure). when i hit the start button, it looks likes the motor is attempting to turn. the shaft turns about 10-degrees then turns back then i hear a click and the start button light goes out. (The click may be overload protection?)

Don't know what machine you have if it has a belt check it. Take belt off & see the motor turns freely also with the belt off see if you can turn the drum if one of them won't turn the belt will slip & cause burning smell. Small clothes getting under the agitator even sometimes in the pump can cause this , check under agitator & check the pump it may not turn if a sock or something gets in it & this can cause the belt to slip. If these seem ok put it in spin & watch the motor it could have a short & will smoke. Good luck

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If your washer doesn't drain or spin, you may read and learn what parts may cause this. First, you will want to check your water pump. You need to make sure it is working. Make sure you check the belt on the pump. Make sure it is not broken or loose. Also, make sure your pulley is not stuck in place. Sometimes, they will stick or barely turn at all. If this is the case, you will need to replace it. If the pump, pulley, and belt are working, make sure your motor is working. You should be able to hear it if it is. If it isn't, check your lid switch. The lid switch can cause the motor to not work. It may need adjusted. If not, go ahead and change it. A bad lid switch may cause the washer to not work at all. Now, if your pump is pumping and the washer still won't spin, you will want to check your belt and clutch. Once again, the belt may be broke or loose. Check to make sure your clutch is not worn also. This may be a case of a bad lid switch again as well. You could have a bad drive motor. This is what controls spinning, draining, and agitation. You could have a broken motor coupler. Over time, they will go bad and need replaced. It is possible that your transmission is slipping or damaged. And lastly, you could have a bad basket drive ir spin bearing. This is what allows the inner tub to move. Since you say relay sounds are heard, it shows the command is OK. The power to the motor is not reaching. It could be relay contact problem.

If you have a option of only spin, try this option. If it works the motor is OK. Otherwise you have to trace the power line and test it through a electrical line tester.

Snaggs, If your model number begins with 417 it could be a couple of issues. Start with the drain pump. Remove the bottom panel and see if the pump is clogged with coins or debris. It will be on the right. Check the pump impeller. Have a bunch of towells handy as you will have a lot of water coming out at you. When you drop the bottom panel you will be able to see if the belt is on in back. If this does not clear up the problem, more than likley it will be in the motor control board. Catriver...post back.
