When i press the on button, the fan comes on and three beeps that follow and nothing else happens.

Sometimes the little buttons underneath are not centered properly. Try pushing around the edges of the "menu" selector button your machine makes a "beep" sound" If you never feel the button move under your finger followed by the "beep" sound then your selector menu button may be broken.

Try running the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics Utility.

Try reseating the RAM, if this does not work then remove the RAM module and take it to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you.

Remove Power Cord then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then put the cord back in and try to start it.

When you press the Power Button are you hearing the fans run, the disk drive running, the cd drive click and the light on it comes on for a second or two?

If you press the power button and you start hearing beep sounds or blinking lights in a continuous pattern (ex. 1 long followed by 2 short) then you have a motherboard issue. Those beep sounds and blinking lights tells the technician what is going on with the computer.

Laptops don't boot for the following reasons: 1) Bad Power Cord. 2) Bad DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the laptop. 3) Static Charge Buildup. 4) Bad Motherboard.

So you have a power light which means your power cord and dc power jack is good. So lets see if you have a static charge buildup.

Press the power button to see if it boots. If it does you had a Static Charge Buildup and it's ok to put your battery back in. You need to be more specific and tell what happens when you plug in the power cord and press the power button. There are a number of reason why a computer will not boot, but if you tell what's going on someone can help you.

3) Static Buildup - try removing the battery and the power cord then Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds put the power cord back in (leave the battery out) and Press the Power Button. If it boots up you had static buildup and can replace the battery, count your blessings and Thank The Lord cuz a dishonest repairman would have told you he had to replace the motherboard for $300

The three beeps shows the Memory Module Test and that symbolise that the memory module is having a problem and to my knowledge when there is a problem with the memory then you have to open the casing and remove the memory module and clean the slot very well and if slot in back and the memory do the same change the to the second memory slot if it happens there again then you change the Memory module.

This will set it to Digital and pressing the circle will change it back to Analogu. The LED will stop blinking and a double beep sound indicates it's been set - that's it
