Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera Logo

The flash on my Canon Rebel xti is not working. the flash pops up, but it is not lighting. I saw some responses about people using q-tips and alcohol, but I do not know what exactly you mean and it is a pin or something! Thanks! Dana

Ok - That is not it... my husband tried that, but it is not the pin.

  • Anonymous Sep 25, 2010

My husband thinks that the camera is 'shot'... he thinks it is time to upgrade... is it possible that I get a refund through fixya? He was mad that I did that, but I saw that it was helping people and I was desperate because I was going to a party today and wanted to take pictures!

Thank you for your help... and if you can provide me info. about getting $ back, i would appreciate it!

I think people were talking about cleaning the flash shoe, in case you use an external flash. However, there is a microswitch under the rails of the hotshoe on top of the camera that could be stuck in the down position.
If that's the case, some people use a toothpick to release it to the "up" position. If this switch is stuck, the camera thinks you have an external flash attached and ignores the popup flash.
The little pin people are talking about is the switch beneath the rails of the hotshoe. You might try to use the qtip and alcohol if it looks dirty. Take the camera in to a repair shop and just ask them where it is if you're still having a problem identifying it.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

I have a canon rebel xti and the flash pops up but doesn't flash even when its dark this is when the setting is in full auto. any ideas? could the "bulb" have broken?

The short answer is yes, that is possible. It's also possible there is a circuitry problem. You will want to verify by trying to use an external flash and making sure it still works. The flash assembly is replaceable if needed.

Good luck!

Thank you.

Flashes Canon 200E and/or Canon 430EZ + Rebel Xti or Canon G-10

No. You will need an EX series flash like the 430EX or 580EX. Those designated as EX II will also work.

Frustrating I am sure. I had the same problem on my first XTi. I cannot remember what the settings were, but I think I was set for portrait and had flash set as the white balance default source. Therefore the camera always popped up the flash assuming that I wanted or needed fill flash.

Change you white balance to sun/shade/tungston etc as is appropriate, choose a faster ISO speed in lower light levels and try using the P or Tv mode and use a shutter speed that generates a middle range aperature for your particular lens.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

EOS Rebel XTi 400D flash not popping up

Flash will automatically pop out only in AUTO mode, if the camera needs some additional lightning. In manual modes, you should use the flash button located at the left down side of the flash compartment, to manually force the flash to pop up

Canon Rebel XTI Flash issue

Maybe there's a problem with your camera's pop-up flash.

Contact Canon Customer Support, and see what they can do for you. Probably they will point where you can get your camera repaired.

Canon Rebel XTi/EOS 400D

I made the mistake of putting ahotshoe protector from my old camera on the new EOS 400D. It stopped the flash from popping up. I took it off and things now work.
