How to remove a chuck on a porter cable 978 drill. Have take out lock screw and tried turning chuck counter clockwise with no luck.

Usually drill motors have a reverse (left) thread retaining screw located in the center of the chuck. The chuck however is typically threaded in the normal right hand configuration. Once the retaining screw is removed place a 1/4" allen wrench short end into the chuck and tighten, next strike the allen wrench with a soft tip mallot (counter clockwise while holding on to the drill motor firmly. This should loosen the chuck, then simply unscrew the chuck by hand. Good Luck!

The screw in the bottom of the chuck is reverse threaded (left tight, right loose). It is also lock-tited so will be hard to remove. Make sure you have a screw driver well seated in the screw and turn it backwards (clockwise) to break it free. Once that is out, lock the short end of an allen wrench (at least 3/8" to 1/2") in the chuck. You'll have to lay the drill on a bench with the long end of the allen wrench hanging over the edge so you can hit it with a hammer hard enough to break the chuch free from the anvil. The chuck is threaded left loose, right tight so hit the wrench to turn the chuck counter clockwise. When you replace the new chuck use a small drop of lock-tite on the anvil threads and screw if it doesn't have some on it already.

Remove the left hand screw from the center of the chuck then lock a allen socket in the jaws and use an impact wrench to buzz it off right hand. If the jaws don't work then weld a nut to in and buzz it off with a regular socket.

If you mean how to take the chuck off, here you go. Open the chuck jaws all the way. There is a screw at the bottom of the chuck going into the shaft of the drill. If I remember correctly, it is a combination flat, or t30. This screw is reverse thread. Remove it by turning it clockwise. Once the retaining screw is out, get a 3/8 inch allen wrench. tighten the short end into the drill chuck. Lay the drill down on a work bench so that the long part of the allen wrench is hanging off the edge, facing you. The chuck comes off regular thread, so you are going to rotate the allen wrench counter clockwise. They are usually pretty tight. The best way is to put the drill in low range, and hit the allen wrench with a hammer so as to turn the drill chuck counter clockwise. Install the new chuck in reverse order.

the chuck is screwed also to main shaft. counter clockwise to remove.

Try two channel lock pliers.
Hold the bit close the the base with one.
Take the other (cloth comes in handy here to prevent marring) and turn the chuck counter clockwise to release.

Alternative (little WD40 on the chuck)
One channel lock plier hold the chuck and put the drill in reverse.
The WD40 should allow the chuck to release easier.

Place drill in vice with chuck in vice facing up . Clamp chuck lightly but with enough force to hold firmly.
put allen wrench in chuck and lightly tap down to make good fit to allen screw head.Clamp chuck jaws down onto allen wrench lightly to hold wrench steady. Take piece of pipe to end of wrench,10".
These chuck screws are tight. Hammer clockwise until screw brakes loose.Open chuck completely and remove screw.Chuck is threaded to spindle shaft . Place allen wrench with long end facing out of tool in chuck and tighten chuck securely. With hammer tap allen wrench sharply counter clockwise ( normal thread.)

I simply placed the chuck into a large vise and turned the drill counter clockwise and the chuck spun right off no problem without damaging anything!! It does have some thread lock on the chuck but just use your man strength and its as simple as turning the lid off the pickle jar! Do not waste your time or money with the removal tool...YOU DONT NEED IT!

Hi Paul with the screw out you will have to lock the short end off a sturdy allen key in the jaws off the chuck then sellect first gear on the drill then with a hammer hit the long side off the allen key so that the chuck unscrews normal thread (anti clockwise) the shock off the hit will free the chuck.

1.) If the unit has this screw place the chuck key, with the chuck facing toward you, into one of the holes on the right side of the chuck. Strike the key in a clockwise direction with a wooden mallet or similar object. This will loosen the screw inside the chuck.
2.) Open chuck jaws fully. Insert screwdriver into the bottom of the chuck to engage screw head. Remove screw by turning clockwise this is a left-hand screw.
3.) With the chuck facing toward you place the key into one of the holes on the left side of the chuck. Using a wooden mallet or similar object, strike the key sharply in a counter-clockwise direction. This will loosen the chuck so that it may be unscrewed by hand.
There is no way to stop the motor from turning.
It may require several attempts to loosen the chuck

2.) Insert the short end of a 1/4" or larger hex Allen wrench into the chuck and tighten. Facing the tool strike the long end of the hex wrench sharply counter clockwise as it is a standard right hand thread. This will loosen the chuck so that it may be unscrewed by hand.
