I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR320E and there's a problem with either my video/graphics card or my screen.
there are a lot of lines on the screen when the computer boots up and even on the desktop.
when I tried to reformat everything on my computer and installed Windows 7 from Vista the problem still persists.
is this just a monitor problem? Or a graphics card error.

Hook a spare monitor to the video output usually on the back, if picture okay! the LCD screen will need to be replaced on the laptop, but if both show the same symptom it is the Video Graphics Card normally built into the motherboard.
I did!, go to hp drivers and look for zv6000t all the drivers working for the vaio, only you have to install manually and look for each file and install for sure work...

try going into the bios and check if the lines are still there,
If the lines are visible while in the bios it means that the LCD is the point of failure however if it's not then go to safe mode with networking so you can still connect to the internet and then download the latest driver for your video card from sony or the video card manufacturer.

For a factory reset there are two installation options: C:\ drive recovery System recovery
