I would check for water in the carb bowl and also the flywheel key maybe sheared allowing the engine to be out of time with the ignition and cause it to backfire and pop.

for openers i would start by having someone check the valve clearances. sounds like you are out of time, and that is a common issue with a mower over 3 years old. if the intakes are opening way to late, and not far enough, you have a problem.
I am not familiar with this model. However, just about all lawn mower engines rely on the blade to act as a flywheel, a very important factor in engine operation.
You may have to inspect the woodruff key that is possibly worn out in the groove of the main shaft, To inspect this key way devise you need to remove the top off the mower probably 4 phillips screws off the plastic housing comes dont forget to pull out the oil stick, then removethe pull chord assembly in one piece 3 rivets need to be drilled out and reinstalled with new ones from Ace hardware when done, then remove the 3/4" nut...tap the shaft not to hard to loosen the flywheel and check to see that the keyway(woodruff pin) is worn out, go to a hardware store with the old one and buy a replacement reinstall everything and mower should be good to go.
Sounds like the carburetor is dirty and needs cleaned. I would suggest trying some fuel line cleaner such as gumout or seafoam in the fuel tank and start and run it a few times to circulate the cleaner, then let it set overnight. May have to start over several times to get it to work. It will eventually start running, tho not real good, until the cleaner gets in there.
Check that the keyway for the flywheel to the crankshaft hasn't sheared. This is a common problem that throws timing very far off causing backfire and no-starts.
