With most vacuums it's not necessary to completely dissassemble to the motor. Most rattles are either something stuck/jammed in, around the wheels and intake area. The rattle, if it's a knocking can also be the internal broken rod of the roller. Rollers can be purchased at hardware stores. Even Walmart and Target carry many models. There are screws in the back and front and guide tabs that the housing cover slips into in the front to remove the top cover as a last resort.
Try cleaning maintence 1st.
1) Unplug 2) Flip over and remove screws on the belt and roller face. Remove face-expose belt &brushes. 3) Slide brush out of grooves. If the belt makes you nervous, slide a large screw driver through it's loop to hold in place while you clean the roller. 4) See if the belt is in good condition free of cracks or tears. If it needs replacing, it slips over the motor spindle for simple change outs. The belt and roller part number should be listed on the vacuum if you look atround. Usually on a metallic plate installed during manufacturing.
You can take a 4' length of old garden hose and listen through it to the outside of the motor while running to see for sure if the noise IS coming from the motor, or infact it's the roller. I hope this helps you.
Your belt is worn and stretched and so it is slipping on the motor drive shaft. That is why it is noisy and smells like burning rubber. You simply need to replace the belt. You can get replacement belts here:
from sound and description most possible is motor is burnt up sparks usually mean metal on metal either bearing or bushings went on motor if u can jiggle the shaft thats bearing if u rotate the shaft by hand and feel and or hear rough grinding the brushes are damaged and the (windings)are also would need to replace motor oreck has a costumer service 800 989 3535 number give them a call not always but some times they will ship a replacement part for free
I think you damaged the belt. I ran over a sock once and it made a grinding noise but still worked for several months after the incident. Finally, the belt broke off. I had it replaced and now it doesn't make that sound.
That dust is from the carbon brushes on the motor. You may need to check them, and also clean out the motor compartment. A slight noise could be a motor bearing starting to go. Does the smell like rubber or electrical. If rubber, then the belt has stretched and needs to replaced. If electrical, then something is causing the motor to run hot, like a clogged filter, or it could be a motor going bad.
If the motor is not smelling of burning or making strange noises I would think you have a problem with mains lead having an internal short circuit. Replacing mains lead should sort this.
If motor is smelling or not sounding correct then you need a new motor.
You might want to check the brushroll. It may need to be replaced. The brushroll end caps on your model should come off easily and if there is a collection of hair, etc under them and you can clean it out, do so. If it is impossible to clean out, you must replace the brush. You can get one at any Eureka/Sanitaire dealer or warranty station. If you have a model 1934, you can upgrade to a better metal brushroll which won't give you as much trouble.
