The case of my songbook Tivoli Radio has become sticky. Can I fix it without replacing?
I have the yellow songbook and it was so sticky and dirty after only a couple of years. I only use it inside, so I removed the sticky coating with nail polish remover and a ton of cotton balls. It worked really well on the yellow one - the finish is a little dull so it matches how it looked when it was new. And it's so clean now!
I have a matt black one with a rubberised finish which was terrible. It was dusty and dirty looking and I couldn't stand having it on the bench. I used nail polish remover wipes which worked quite well but what worked better was a bottle of alcohol which I purcahsed from the chemist. It was 70% alcohol and worked brilliantly. Well worth the effort. All I can say is avoid buying the model with a rubberised finish. Bad mistake by Tivoli.
I have the red matte Songbook, and was also able to get mine completely clean aand without any sticky residue by using nail polish remover and a bunch of cotton pads. Takes a bit of scrubbing, but you can see the gunk coming off on the pads and just keep on swiping until surface is smooth and clean. I finished off with a wipe down with a damp sponge and then dried with a soft cloth. Looks great!
I have the white one, and it was hideous after a couple of years. I used fingernail polish and a Mr. Clean Eraser Bar (with cotton balls and q-tips for in between the buttons on the front), and it was quick!
Be careful with the sticky stuff. It's phthalate, a toxic class of chemicals which are now banned in most parts of the world.
Don't use 100% pure acetone :) learned the hard way. it faded the black print on the front of the radio. I switched to regular nail polish remover pads and they worked much better.
Alcohol + cotton = Perfect and Shiny, thanks
I just cleaned my 20+ year old Tivoli PAL after replacing the battery. I used 70% rubbing alcohol with a paper towel and the old matte-rubber finish (what was left of it) just came right off. A bonus is that it didn't remove any of the control or logo markings.Since the now spotlessly-clean finish was a little mottled, I coated it with a light beeswax compound I use on leather furniture. I'm sure olive-oil will also work, but this leaves a nice finish without any oily residue. Carnauba auto wax (or any car coating) will also likely work to bring the finish back. In any case, a fresh battery and a clean finish has rekindled my appreciation for this very fine radio.

Rubber casing on pure digital radio has gone sticky possibly from being in the sun
