I do not have a manual on this tv. Color has been progressively darker and I do not know how to get to the menu to lighten picture. I am wondering if this is because one of the lights is going out?
Unplug the TV,remove the front panel to gain access to the CRT sockets - loosen the screws that hold the sockets to the necks of the CRT's - now unplug and replug each socket from each CRT - this will remove any dust resistance on the pins of the CRT's - after doing this, the brightness level should go up.

The picture tube type (CRT) rear projection tubes require annual cleaning.
With set off and back removed locate the three large black lens atop the chassis--hard to miss them.
The are the red, green, and blue tubes and are your light source for the picture---------if dark and they are dirty or dusty the picture will be darker and not as sharp or clear as it once was..
spray some glass cleaner on a paper towel and wipe them clean.
Do not touch anything else in set and do it with set unplugged.
put back cover on and see if picture is noticeably improved; if so do it once a year or more if in a dusty place.
Go into the tv menu and select the Preferences menu and set your picutre preference from Theater to Normal. The TV is currently in Theater mode, wich is for viewing with no lights on in the room. Switching it to normal lightens the pictue a lot.
there so many things which can cause that to happen an these are thwe following,
i a tube has to be tested
ii a line transformer
iii vedio amplifier
this tests can be done in w/shop where other tvs are of the same.
looking on the back of ur tv near the cable input jack there might be an area where u can adjust the brightness on the flyback transformer. if there isn't you will have to remove the back of the tv and adjust it this way. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE BRIGHTNESS KNOB ON THE FLYBACK, CAUSE YOU MAY BE SHOCKED. so please be careful.
If you are getting the same problem with both TV monitors it could then be assumed it's an input problem to the TV monitor. If you are using a digital output from your receiver it could be the cabling. If you are using an analog output from your receiver it is probably coming from the receiver.
Digital video processing does have issues with darker scenes.
Can you try another video source seperate from the receiver like a DVD or better yet an analog VHS, if you still have one. Good luck and let me know.
tv just got really dark & very very hard to see pic.could it be the bulb?
