If your iMac is an Intel Core 2 Duo running Leopard, it's certainly not a G4.
From the symptoms described, you have either a bad LCD panel or a bad LVDS cable. Either way, what the tech told you is wrong. They can both be replaced. Whether it is cost-effective or not is for you to decide.

Shortly after the warranty was up the first vertical yellow line appeared and now, about 1 months later another vertical line appeared. He's not happy to hear it only gets worse and apple won't do anything...

Although its possible for graphics processor failures to cause vertical lines, they more often create horizontal ones. The first culprit to check for a vertical line problem is the LVDS cable, which it turns out is not that expensive a part (not counting all the work there is in getting to it). To verify this, I would gently flex the cable while the iMac is open and operating, and see if the lines get better or worse. It may also be that the cable itself is fine and just a few of the connector pins at either end are intermittent, in which case it just needs reseating.

How long to charge battery?

bateries have their own specifications. You can read it on the label. But,most of all it must be charge from 12-15 hrs. on its very first charging ( for a new battery) and later on or for the second time and so on, you may charge it 2 to 4 hrs.,sometimes 8 hrs..Leting you know,a battery can be charge even a short span of time, for example is 30 minutes only.In that 30 minutes try to measure its stored volt using a volt meter or a multi-tester,and the result is laready 12 volts (if your batery is 12 volts.)do you believe that? YES.! because a battery is so easy to store power. But,the problem is that its so easy to drain its stored power. You know why?because the current or amper of the baterry is still weak that the given specification.,.So,for short explanation, the longer time you charge your batery equals the longer time to drain the power. For example: when you charge the batery within 4 hours, thus the batery will be drained after 4 hours.

Vertical line in imac 17" core 2 duo intel 2006 model

Attach an external monitor (you may need to buy an adapter to try this) and turn on Display Mirroring in the Display preferences.
If the same symptom shows on the external monitor, then you've got a video card problem. If not, I'd say you're screen has some kind of damage of failure.
Sorry, but either one is likely going to require a trip to the Apple Hospital.
At least with the display problem, you could use the external monitor until repaired.
