Windows Movie Maker can't directly burn playable DVD. It can only copy DVD data on your DVD discs. You need a DVD burning software tool to burn your movies on your DVD. DVD burning software can burn playable DVD and in this way, you can play the burned DVD on your DVD player. You can try Leawo DVD Creator which can support more than 180 formats. Videos in formats like AVI, MKV, MP4, WMV, Xvid, MOV, and FLV can be burnt to DVD-9 and DVD-5 discs. With it, you can easily create DVD from all kinds of videos like homemade videos or movie clips.

The reason why the DVD disk you created may not contain the file format the DVD player recognizes. On a normal DVD disk there are two folders - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. The video files are located in the VIDEO_TS folder. This video folder contains the VTS_xxx.vob video files (the video files has a .vob extension).
The video file you created may have a avi or wmv or mov or mpg extension, whilst these video files can be played on a computer but they won't play on a DVD player.
Check the movie software you are using and make sure it creates the correct file format for a DVD player.

After preparing video cd in windows movie maker it cannot be played in my philips dvd player why? i have o/s window vista home edition.tell me the correct solu tion for this problem.

did you "close" or "finalize" the VCD? that's what makes the cd most compatible with all other players. you'd be surprised how many burners don't have that available setting as the "default" setting. also note some of the older, and/or more expensive DVD players have problems with some VCDs. sometimes the newer and cheaper models are more compatible friendly.

I just used Windows Movie Maker to convert my .avi movie files from my Nokia onto a DVD. WMM burned the files succesfully and the DVD plays fine on my computer's DVD burner, but WMM is supposed to finalize...

Movie Maker is NOT the software you want for this process :D I tried a few years back as did my friend but it didn't work. Movie maker is ver basic and designed to teach children basic slideshow/video techniques. Try installing the free trial of Corel Video Studio Pro x3, this can make propper dvds, and also makes your files HD.

DVD+RW Formats

What Operating System do you have?
What you need is a DVD authoring program. You have a plethora of programs for Linux (K3b, DVDAuthor...) and for Windows, it depends on the Version (XP: Windows Movie Maker, Vista: Windows DVD Maker).
Just open the concerned program, create a new project, add your movie and burn your DVD!

Windows Movie Maker disk won't play on my dvd player

DVD-Rs have higher compatibility. Also use a good brand like Maxell.

Also, make sure you finalize the DVD.
