In any Windows environment, the printer itself becomes a dummy terminal and all changes to the printer will be over-ridden by the application or the operating system.
Windows Vista should automatically detect and install devices attached to the computer. Simply connect the printer to your computer and power it on.
If the driver does not automatically install, you can follow the steps below to install a resident driver which is part of Windows Vista. The resident driver installation should only be used if the printer is not detected and installed.
1. Click on START, CONTROL PANEL and PRINTERS.
2. Click the ADD PRINTER button. If you do not see ADD PRINTER, right-click in the PRINTERS window and select ADD PRINTER from the menu.
3. The ADD PRINTER wizard window will appear select Add a Local Printer.
4. Select the port the printer is connected to from the drop down window beside Use an Existing Port, click NEXT.
5. In the next window select EPSON under Manufacturers and your printer model under Printers.
6. In the Type a Printer Name window, Set as Default is automatically selected. If you, have another printer that will be the default simply remove the check and click NEXT to install the driver.
7. Ensure the printer is directly connected to the computer and that the printer is ready to print. Click PRINT TEST PAGE to test the printer.
8. Once the test page has printed, click FINISH to exit the wizard.
*NOTE: Depending on your system the computer may ask for your Windows disk, if so insert your Windows CD into your CD-ROM drive and click OK.
To make adjustments to the output quality and speed in Windows Vista, please do the following:
1. Click on START, CONTROL PANEL, and PRINTERS.
2. Right click on the printer icon, and choose PRINTER PREFERENCES.
3. Click on the ADVANCED button in the bottom right corner.
4. Click on the GRAPHICS option and click the down arrow.
5. Choose the lowest number to drop your resolution and pick up your speed.
6. Click on PRINT FEATURES and choose the option HIGH SPEED ON.
7. Click OK to apply the changes.
8. Once again right click on the icon for your printer, and choose the PROPERTIES tab.
9. Click on the ADVANCED tab and click on the button called PRINT DIRECTLY TO THE PRINTER.
10. Click APPLY (if applicable) and/or click OK to apply the changes.
The driver you are using is a graphics driver and may not have the adequate speed for your purposes. In Windows VISTA there are more basic drivers which respond better to custom page sizes and speed adjustments. Windows also has a driver called GENERIC TEXT ONLY which is made as a universal driver for all printers just for speed. To add in either of these drivers please do the following:
1. Click on START, CONTROL PANEL and PRINTERS.
2. In the left hand column choose the option ADD PRINTER. The ADD PRINTER WIZARD comes up, click on NEXT.
3. Select Add a Local Printer.
4. Click on NEXT.
5. Select the port the printer is connected to from the drop down window beside Use an Existing Port, click NEXT.
6. In the next window select EPSON under Manufacturer. Please use the guide below to select an appropriate Emulation driver. If you wanted to install the Windows universal driver, choose GENERIC under Manufacturer and choose TEXT ONLY, click NEXT.

It must be windows vista driver problem.
According to Epson 2nd level Tech Support, the problem is with the Vista driver that automatically installs when you plug in the printer. Epson has not yet released a driver for this printer.
