Weird folder/filenames that will not delete There is a folder on my WD 250 GB Passport Flash drive who's properties show it to be using 157 GB of memory. The Read Only attribute was set, unchecked it. I tried to delete this folder with Ubuntu 9.10 it deleted some of the files but could not delete the rest, i tried to give full permission but errors occures whenever i try to, anyways now tha **** has occupied 87GB of space, most of the files are hidden and i can not even rename these files The folder's name is "PSE Catalog v6 backup" and I created it when I upgraded Photoshop Elements from v5 to v6. The folder contains 3 sub folders and 7 files, all with names that contain strings of weird characters. The dates connected with these folders and files are also weird; like 2016, 2070, 2021, 2084, 1984, etc. The file types are weird too. The strange thing is that when I try to delete them I get this fatal error: "Error Deleting File of folder": "Cannot delete [followed by a string of weird characters]: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify correct path and file name.". There are 4 folders in the folder in question and they all have strings of weird characters for names. They are all empty. I know this from checking their properties, because they will not open. When I try to open them I get another fatal error message: "G:/PSE Catalog v6 backup" that says: "G:/PSE Catalob v6 backup [followed by a string of weird charactors] is not accessible. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". The files in the folder are large, 5 in the GB range the other 2 in the 200MB range. There were hundreds of image files in the folder too, but I was able to delete them. My question is: How do I delete them??? In the worse case scenario I could reformat the drive, but does this type of drive have application software on it, that the drive uses?

Problem: Folders / files in USB flash drive got named with weird strange characters & those folder / files cannot be copied or deleted.

Reason: Virus infected

Solution:
1. Click on "Computer"
2. Right click on the drive that contains USB flash drive
3. Select "properties"
4. Click on "Tools"
5. Click on "Check Now"
6. Check disc options will appear on screen, put a tick mark in the box in front of Automatically fix file system errors
7. Tick mark in the box in front of Scan for & attempt recovery of bad sectors is not necessary.
8. Click on "Start"
9. Upon finishing of this task, screen will show message "Your device disc was successfully scanned" and bla bla. Close it.
10. After this process the undeletable folder in USB flash drive can be deleted by selecting it & deleting it. The contents of affected folders files cannot be recovered.

After lot of struggle I got this solution on my own by the grace of God.
Sure it will work for others too.

Thanks and regards Raju

The error messages don't hint at permission problems, they hint that the filenames contain characters that serve as shell delimiters.
I suspect an "rm -rf" of the top-level folder in question will sidestep this issue and delete the files for you.

My passport is originally 250 GB but now it says that it's only 94 MB. I don't know what happened.

is that a free space and used space graphic? or does the entire disk(use start my computer right click on hard drive and see what total amount of space says)

if you have been using this for a while, that would explain the lower figure but this graphic will clearly show the balance on that drive

here's a link for a free disk optimizer that might help too

My Music folder suddenly deleted all the files in it, but the folder won't delete because it says it's not empty; however, it won't let me open it either. It keeps popping up an Error code 0x80070091: The...

You probably have a disk-drive with some "bad" sectors.
So, when you try to read the sectors that contain the directory for the 'My Music' folder,
that sector cannot be read, and thus Windows reports an "empty" folder.

It's probable that your disk-drive is about to _completely_ fail, not just _partially_.
Make a backup of what files & folders that _can_ be read.

Transfered 180gb of movies from mu wd 2 another hard drive now lost my movies on mine but the memory shows there still there

> now lost my movies on mine

I presume that you deleted those files from your 'C:' drive.

> memory shows they're still there

Copy the files from the external drive back to your 'C:' drive.

Wd passport file customizing

If you open the Computer directory and identify the drive letter for the WD Passport drive, right-click on the drive folder and select properties. The properties tool for the drive will open showing several tabs. Select the Customize tab and you will see a heading for "use this folder type as a template" with a drop down menu. Here you can select different categories for the folder and apply it to subdirectories also by checking the box below. This should give the folders more of a vista look! If you want to personalize further and add your own images to the folder icons you can also do this here. If you don't select the apply to subdirectories option you can manually apply different styles to different folders in subdirectories. If you don't like the way things have turned out you can also restore the default settings.

Hope this answers your question.

Have fun
