Hello, like a fool I went onto the demo firmware on my machine. I tried the reset button a number of times but it comes back to the demo screen. Now I am getting a screen titled Recovery 108, with the option to repair or format my system. I have tried to upload the new firmware onto it but nothing happens. Please can you help me as I think it is shagged.
In order to fix this issue, we are going to need to force the unit into a
recovery application. In order to do this please make sure that the unit is
completely shut off. When the unit is off, you are going to want to press and
hold the TV/LCD button and the power button at the same time until a recovery
code 101 pops onto the screen. As soon as you see this, let the buttons go.
Once you got this screen up, you are going to want to repair the operating
system by arrowing down and clicking repair. After this is done it is going
to ask you to connect your device to the computer and install an update file.
In order to do this, you are going to want to go to www.archos.com and go to
downloads. You are going to want to download the firmware for your unit.
After the firmware is saved to your desktop, plug the unit into the computer
and open up "My computer" and you should see the Archos in the list
of drives.
Your going to want to copy the firmware onto the root directory and not in
any file folders. Once the firmware is on the Root directory, go ahead and
unplug the unit from the computer. It should still say Please plug your
device into the computer and install an update file. Click OK. After this is
done, it is going to tell you to please connect DC or USB in to continue with
the update. Go ahead and let the unit install and reboot. After this is
done, you should be able to use the unit properly. If the unit still does not
work properly, we are going to have to create an RMA for the Archos. If you

WRONG GUYS
Device needs to be pluggeg in before the format process is started otherwise pc will not read the Archos's HDD i have done this at least 8 times read the buttom and follow it carefully step by step
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code (104) on it. and i tried the same solution with error 102 and 108 and it worked
* Download the firware Upgrade 2.1
* Plug the Archos to Pc
* When the white option screen comes up pick the format disk
* Wait until all done do not pick any option on archos after format is done Pc should recognize your archos in 5 seconds
* Put the firmware in root section of the archos not in any folder.
* Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc first and then unplug the cable.
* Do not pick any option on the Archos screen
* Just turn it off from the power button by holding it until it turns off
* Wait a couple seconds and plug it back to pc
* it will come up with white screen again but this time it will start the Update you will see the progress bar moving, wait until it is all done, it will shut off. Turn it back on and your archos will be back to normal
You need to load your plugins back in order to device to function fully.

Last option for those who have tried all the recommendations above. I am experienced on fixing Archos HDD issues. I have created a business purchasing archos PMP with HDD errors. Fixing them and turning arround selling and providing feature free tech support and free repaire services. Last recommendation for the device has been all of the above recommendations did not work is. Load the firmware 2.1 and let it update itself and when that is done turn the dvice off. Open up the archos's back cover by removing a couple of screws. ( ATTENTION this will avoid your factory warranty ). I do not recommend to do this if you are not good to handel removing very little screws and not gentel to remove important parts. For Archos 605 30 gb remove all the screws holding the stand and gently remove the stand out ( 2 pieces) 30 gb slide the back cover toward the space created by removing the back stand then it will be free to come off. For the 605 80 gb and higher HDD models take all the screws gently out what is holding the back frame first and remove the frame when you can. Center gray plate is held by two screws on the top where the HDD connector is. Remove those two screws gently be carefull they are very small i recommend you have a magnet before starting to take screrws out and put them on the magnet so they wont be missing in action ;-) after the gray back plate removed back of the device will be exposed there is 4 more screws holding the HDD down from 4 corners on the side after those removed grab the HDD from the buttom lift it up about quarter inch and move it left and right and pull it out toward yourself be very carefull to not damage the connection socket and pins on the HDD this part is very important
after the HDD removed turn the device on and off and plug the HDD it back in. This will cheat the mainboard and recognise the HDD again this option works better if you have a seond arhos HDD by swapping them and puting the original one back in. Be carefull to mark the actual HDD comes out from the device Archos puts a code on each HDD and they will work with only the devices they installed in originally from factory.

I am a technician for the technical support department at Archos. For the plug-ins, DON'T REPURCHASE, call us to resend them.
Best above solution is true, good job. There are a couple other solutions, too. Using a pc w/our units is better than using a Mac, but both work. I don't have time to comment on the rest, sorry...
Other FAQ's can be found on www.archos.com.
And formatting units don't delete fully installed firmware or plug-ins. IF you need plug-ins or games resent, there are forms online to get them, each one is tied into the PcB w/product key, so if you get an exchange or something like that just call us.
Sorry, just had to add that on.
Oh, and we're coming out w/Gen6 in 3-5 months. Web browser should then be for free. The only reason it's not w/Gen4 or 5 is that WE WILL HAVE TO RAISE PRICE OF UNITS, PERIOD.

1. Downloaded the latest firmware from archos into a download directory on my computer
2. Formated the archos drive
3. Copied the a605 to my computer's desktop. (This was my problem - Make sure the file name on the desktop hasn't changed from the original download file name). If the file is a duplicate, the file name will have changed.
4. Connect the a605 to your computer
5. Copy the new firmware to the root of the drive.
6. Press ok and all is well.
I have a similar problem but with error code 102. Have tried all the methods above but when I opt for repair (or format) the unit reboots after about 20 seconds backk to the same screen.
Any other specila tips out there?

I just get a black screen on or off nonthing else never droped it never got wet nonthing

use a paper clip or something that is thin enough to press the reset button. im pointing directly to the hole that the button is located. so please be simple its easy. anyways good luck ok
also when you reset it you will still get the demo mode screen then it should flash and the Archos entertainment your way should pop up if it doesnt work post the results -k-

Im a linux user and i was getting the 101 code now im getting the 108 error i dont have any idea of what is going on and wold like to have this fixed as this to me is extreamly fustrating and im quite enfuriated that the MVista system is as crappy as it is. i would like to know directly from the techs at archos who designed the os on how to fix it my e-mail is

I got the recovery code 108 error when i turn on the archos i come up this screen about this code 108 error i try install an firewire updater but when i install it and restart the archos it still does it this thing i don't install this because it might cause problems to you and your archos from anoymus

I had the same problem. The way to fix it is
1. Download the latest firmware from archos
2. Format the drive
3. Connect the a605 to your computer
4. Copy the new firmware to the root of the drive...... it may be necessary to assign a drive letter to the drive from the disk management mmc
5. Press ok and u're done
I tried ALL of the above, but i still get the 108 or 101 error and i also get the message that the update can't be executed or something, anyways, exept for the wite screen with format or restore option on it, all it does is flash a bit :'( *cries*

I have exactly the same problem, except my recovery code is 101.I have searched through archos support site only find that the firmware i have down loaded and installed is just an update.
Had the same problem with the error code 108, got the firmware update from the archos website & it installed ok. Now that it has booted up again however, the touchscreen capability has gone. Any time I click on the screen it only lets me access the menu bar, so I'm reduced to using the controls on the side.
Any ideas on how to rectify this?

I have an Archos 605 wifi and had recovery code 105, which I kept getting despite updating firmware. The solution is after you update the firmware DO NOT PRESS OK!!!! First you must connect the archos to the dvr station (ie it is getting power from the mains) then press ok. Mine is now working again although formatting the disk meant I lost my opera browser plugin so have to buy again :-(

I have the same problem. All i did was drop it twice and the harddrive shifted. I put it baack in place and it worked for a bit , but broke again. Its ridiculiious that i spent loads of money on a mp4 player, i drop it twice and it friking breaks!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are reading this and you dont have an archos.... dont get one, your better off with a ipod.

have a small problem guys. when i connect my archos 605 to the pc it says installing driver software, halfway thru it stops and says driver sofrware not installed sucessfully. it doesnt appear in my computer either as a hard disk so i cannot drag drop anything to it. PLS HELP. really need to know how to solve this problem.
i was working on my newly acquired archos 5 while charging through pc. the screen suddenly went black. i tried to restart and reset but nothing happened. 5 minutes later i tried to restart it and it starting to work again.
