Did mcculloch manfacture the same piston rings for all their 38cc saws? I have a broken piston ring and cant seem to find one or the part #. Mcculloch MS1838AV 38cc

    I dont have a sticker, and the manual i got off the internet dosent give you a serial # prefix or a model #. The only thing it tells me is the model name: ms1838av. This is the manual i am looking at.

McCulloch Manuals
Illustrated Parts Lists: (IPLs) are fairly simple. On the underside of McCulloch saws is a black and yellow tag; the upper number (“Power Mac 320” 600021H) is the model, below it a serial number (11-18555). These 2 numbers are combined to create an IPL number (“Power Mac 320” IPL number = 11-600021H). The IPL number can be used to find the correct IPL for every McCulloch parts supplier I’ve found. If the parts supplier only list part numbers the proper IPL is the source for the part number.
Operator’s Manuals: are much more difficult. I’ve dialed this number many times (Contact Us - All McCulloch Products 1 (800) 521-8559) and have yet to get a satisfactory response. Please try this! If enough of us try they will fix it! If unsuccessful with McCulloch try here:

    Where did you get this "MS1838AV"? How do you know it is 38cc? American or European (All American models I have seen end in a letter, European models end in a number)?

    It appears all 3818s share the same engine and parts cannot be ordered below the short block.

    At "arinet" (M&D) entire short block $76.82

    I think they are replacing your 38cc with 32cc engine... I could be wrong now... but I don't think so.

    My Macs are pre MTD ownership the number letter suffix may have changed.

    I think I got it backward, they are replacing anything smaller with 38cc.

What is the head pressure for a poulan 38cc chainsaw?
Assuming that you are referring to the compression ratio - that would be above around 100 PSI (after about 3 good pulls) NOTE: anything below 90 PSI will usually prevent 2 cycle engine from running (This is caused by scored cylinder, stuck/broken ring or... if you are luck it is just flooded really bad under piston).

If you where referring to Cylinder bolt torq (bolts under saw that hold cylinder down) than that would be 100 in lbs.

I fill the tank with petrol , not 2strike. i think i destroyed the piston. i want parts (pm 484 model)
cost you more to buy the parts than to get a new saw.and thats not even considering the labor which will be twice the parts cost. wrist pin ,connecting rod,rings ,piston
a lot of work with no guarantte that it will run or for how long it will keep running.
I just bought a new 2013 saw for $20.00 more that they wanted for a new carb for my old saw and went from a old worn 14 in
bar and dull , worn out & streched out chain to a brand new never used bar & chain which goes for38.95 at rome depot
so, if i take the price of a new bar & chain off the price of the saw,I got the new power head for only $40.00
I know, thats weird thinking----but not that far out there .

The only reason you should consider fixing your old saw is if its a like 100 cc or something that cost $995.00 only then would it be worth thinking about.

If you are unable to obtain the correct piston ring at the agents, measure the bore of the cylinder and the width and depth of the ring grooves in the piston and see if a lawnmower repair center can match up the rings for you.

No compression
It sounds like it has a broken ring or the ring is worn out.Or possibly a hole in the piston.The only solution is to take it apart or replace saw.Depending on how old the saw is you might have trouble finding parts.Alot of companys will obselete them.

Internet search for "McCulloch 302768" returns many sites, many different costs. Some include the bearing some do not. The bearing should also be changed IMO.

Input your saw you get pn 29888 also widely available (Oregon 29888) at varied dollar amounts. Ditto bearing.

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).

How do you know if a piston ring has gone on a Ford Puma?
You cannot see a broken piston ring without taking the engine apart. If there is a broken piston ring you may or may not hear or see any evidence of it. If the piston itself is broken you will hear, see and maybe smell it with burning oil.
