The tank is situated on the RHS.
The Print Head rests there when not in use.
Open the flap to expose the Print Head, slide the Print head across to the left.
On the area where the Print head rests, there is a black plastic square of plastic which contains 2 narrow vertically positioned ink pads. This is also spring loaded.from underneath.
The pad on the left is for BLACK the other Color.
These become saturated with ink during the cleaning process.
I suspect the Print Head has a built in sensor to detect overloaded waste tank.
The pad can be removed this by hooking it out, sideways.
Unless the pads are leaking ink everywhere I wouldn't remove it.
Use Cotton Buds to soak up the excess ink. I used about 15.

Then.....
Turn off printer
Hold down RESUME button and press POWER button.
Keep holding down POWER button and release RESUME button.
Press RESUME button 2 times, then release BOTH buttons.
The GREEN light will flash and stop flashing.
When the GREEN light goes out, press the RESUME button 4 times.
Press the POWER button and the printer should turn OFF
If not press the POWER button once more.

My experience was when turning the printer on at a later date the POWER and RESUME lights still flashed.
All I did was press the RESUME button and the printer operated as normal.

Refer to the manual or online to find out how to properly execute the waste tank procedure. Also the manual should tell you how to reset the code
after you clean the tank. The tank is located on the bottom, it is a
felt pad that you have to rinse out. There is lots of ink involved so
 it can get messy.

Tank absorber full and lights blinking

The POWER Lamp Flashes Orange Eight flashes: Waste ink tank almost full
The printer has a built-in waste ink tank for the ink used during print head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that the waste ink tank is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink tank becomes completely full, contact a Canon service representative.

Note
Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink tank becomes completely full, printing will no longer be possible.

Soon after initiating printing, Canon s400 printer stops with a loud clunk. This produces Error 5100. Turning off and on again does not help.

Hi You can Try

Error Code 5100 This happens lots in caon
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Canon S450

From what I can tell the 6 orange lights indicate a print head failure. Why the print head has failed is another question maybe too old (I've read somewhere that they only operate for a fixed amount of time), maybe printed enough pages (somewhere else indicated that they only print a fixed number of pages). The solution is to replace the printhead (not just the ink tanks).

There is no way to know which print head needs replacing, so unless you have a spare one you will just have to choose which to change, and if you get it wrong try the other one. It appears to be an expensive way of solving the problem (but I have just found it cheaper to buy a print head which comes with 3 tanks than to buy 3 separate tanks!).

Canon S400 problem

The little internal button battery that keeps track of time is going dead. Canon will fix this for free on your model camera regardless of warranty status. Here's the link to the info:
