Maytag Preforma washing machine

The agitator has come away from the base in my Maytag Preforma washing machine (model # PAV2300 AWW). I tried to put the bolt back on the base but the base appears to be stripped. I had also noticed a few days before that my machine seemed to be spinning at an unusually high speed. Could this have caused the agitator problem? Also, is the base easy to replace (or could it be a separate part that the base sits on?) or should I have a service tech do it? Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest Service Technician is cheaper than doing it yourself Bev007. It will save you headache too. Depending on the severity of the damage, you'll be working on the transmission attaching the shaft of the pulsator or agitator.

How do I remove the agitator - I removed the bolt on the top and can't budge it

Pull harder. You have to pry your finger tips under the base and give it a good pull.

Loose Agitator

Usually, there is a bolt that holds the agitator on. If you remove the cap off the center of the agitator, you should find a bolt underneath that you can tighten back down. Adding a little thread lock to the bolt wont hurt.

Agitator fall off and knocking noise during spin cycle

there should be a rubber washer with the bolt. if it is missing the bolt may back of during agitation. also the threads on the transimision may be stripped. Some Green lock tight found in most hard ware stores should help. the knocking noise is probably due the agitator coming loose.

Maytag won't spin or agitate

I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps
