I have an nv ds 60, play back was fine , then horizontal wide bands appeared 5 to 7 with square pixel colors in them. also there is no sound on all 10 tapes.

Usually head cleaner tapes do not do much more than wear the heads out and move the dirt around or in some cases if it is an old tape it may add dirt to the system!!! Someone needs to remove the cassette cover and clean the video drum, tape path, pinch roller and capstan with denatured alcohol. Do not use anything but 100% alcohol as anything else will have contaminates in it. The video head pole pieces are extremely small (we're talking microns) and can be plugged easily. Cleaning the tape guides, audio heads, erase head, capstan and pinch roller is pretty straight forward and the same as any audio deck. Using a lint free Q-tip (or special head cleaning sticks from electronic stores) dip in alcohol and remove any dirt etc from the pieces. Cleaning the video drum is a little trickier. Using the same kind of cleaning stick dipped in alcohol, gently wipe around the video drum assembly. Never, ever go up and down across the face of the head or you could break the video heads!! If you do not know the proper way to do this you should take it to a qualified tech or you could do more damage than good. If you clean your unit the way that I described it should be fine. On occasion I have had a unit with a clogged head that requires a different technique to clean but you would not be able to do this. If cleaning does not work you will need to take it to a repair shop for service. Good luck.

This is actuall quite a simple problem... What you have explained here is a loss of vertical deflection. By the symptoms you described, working now and not working it's most likely the the vertical IC an LA7847-E has probably become ring-cracked at the point where the pins are soldered to the pc board. Depending on how long it has been allowed to arc the IC may have failed also, but they are not terribly expensive or difficult to repair - at least not here in the shop. The main board has to be removed. Locate the vertical IC - it will be mounted to a metal heat sink and the IC will be stamped LA7847. Then turn the board over and inspect where the pins are soldered to the foil side of the board. One or more will look ring cracked or fractured all the way around the pin. At this point you have two options, carefully reflow solder over each pin and put it back together or replace the IC by de-soldering it and removing it from it's heatsink. remember to use a good heat sink grease when applying the new IC.. There should also be a couple of caps in pretty close proximity to that IC... One should be about 50v/100uf and in the shop here we test em all... You might also just replace that one for good measure - they're not expensive either... If any of this sounds too complicated take it to a reputable shop and pick it up in a day or two.. Job shouldn't be that expensive or time consuming. My record in the shop here for doing those is 15 in one day. Average cost for that set, we charge is under $100 if you bring it in and pick it up.. your guides have come loose , probably - the digital sound will be next to go because the bottom edge of your tapes are being folded - open the cassette tape lid by pressing the small pin near one hinge and gently lifting the door - if there are any creases ? get the guides aligned ! to protect your library ; ( if there are no creases , try a sony d8 cleaning tape - once ! before getting a repair quote ) ;

I have the same problem happening and can't find a straight answer. Some posts are leading me to believe that it may be dirty heads, and that the camera needs cleaning.

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off. My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).
