They are advertised as 50 foot range, but the accuracy starts falling off past about 35 feet

The 48252 is kind of "finniky". Angle has to be good, surface not irregular or like a cusion, can't be anything in the way. There's a troubleshooting section in the manual - I have attached it in case your's got misplaced. Just enter the Captcha, and the link will appear at the top right of the large pannel in the next screen.

Is it new and under warranty?
You say it works, but is doesn't turn on. It can't be both. Details say that once you turn it on, you have to press another button to make it work. Presumably to make sure you don't get the laser in the eye or someone else's eye.
Secondhand and battery worn out?

Why can't I find the owners manual for my Laser Trac,model # 320.48254 ?

If it is a Craftsman, manuals can be requested from Sears that sells Craftsman tools and supports them.

Does not measure distance

Put in new batteries, clean lens, and calibrate. If this does not work, type " Leica Disto A6 Laser Distance Meter user manual " into computer search engine. It will bring up sites for manual.

I have a dlr130 bosch distance measurer, but since yesterday the laser intensity has gone low, i can't see the laser point in the day, and it's not a sunny day it's cloudy actually.. !!!
