The number light on top of my trolling motor is out. And the handel that control the speed is broke.

mine did the same thing. It turns out that the bottom half of the shaft threads into the top half. So facing down toward the motor spin it counterclockwise while holding the small gear at the top of the shaft and it will tighten. Next you will have to adjust the cable slider gear. With the top off take the six screws out and lift the cable and gear out. Next put your foot pedal at mid position. Then make sure the motor is pointed forward and reinstall the slider gear and the six screws. Last put the top on and make sure the arrow indicator is pointing forward and thats it.

I just recently had a simialr problem. No speed control and motor only ran at 100. I talked to the minn kota tech rep and sent him my control board and he said it had a bad potentiometer...however, I had to buy a control board to fix the problem ($215). Hate to say it but sounds like you may need a new control board.

Hi thommo5473,
Do you have your owner's manual? If not, here is a website with the document: http://www.motorguide.com/userfiles/file/Support/OwnersManuals/2011%20Wireless%20Manual.pdf
From what you've said, I'm not sure exactly what is going on. The instructions state that the control will beep when it's on and a button is pushed, then you'll get a longer beep when it goes off.
Now, the fact that you don't get a speed change... did you just push the button and let go or have you tried just holding the button down? Just pushing and letting go will give just a slight change, but holding the button down will give a greater speed change.
In the troubleshooting section, they give things to do if something doesn't work, such as reprogramming, the control doesn't have the serial number of the remote entered into its memory.
Other reasons for problems are weak batteries, etc.
Try the things in the troubleshooting section of the owner's manual, then if that doesn't work, call the service number in their. They should help you out. If something's wrong with the system, then they should replace it.
I hope this helps, if it does, I'd appreciate your vote. Thanks,
Handie Andie
SOURCE: Wire going to prop of Motorguide trolling motor shorted
Unless you are mechanically inclined, dont attempt this. Take the lower unit apart by removing the prop and removing the two bolts that hold the forward and aft housing to the center housing. Fwd being the cone shaped part. Pull the aft housing away from the motor so you can inspect the connections to the board that holds the brushes and the soldered wiring terminals. You should find the solder missing from at least one of the terminals that connects the wiring from the foot switch to the speed control windings inside the aft housing. Clean up the terminal and wiring and re-solder. Also re-flow the solder on the other terminals. Clean up the seals and the area where the seals meet the housing parts. Replace seals if damaged. Reassemble the lower unit and torque the bolts 45-50 in-lbs and no more otherwise you will fail the seals. This problem is due to a "cold" solder joint that creates a high resistance to elec current flow and heats enough to melt the solder. This is a result of poor quality control at the manufacturer. Good luck.
