Black screen on IXUS 500

If the camera is showing a black or distorted screen when set to photo, and photos that are taken with the black screen also show up black or distorted, then this would likely be a CCD imager failure, a common occurrence for your model camera.

Hi!
There could be two causes - a dead CCD or a broken shutter cable inside the lens (so the camera is not able to open the shutter) - they both are common problems with the camera and are expensive to repair. I don't think it's worth it.

try to take video on Movie mode, if you won't get picture on LCD the CCD is dead. That means you need to replace the whole zoom lens. it costs a lot, not worth to repair.

Did you see the posting regarding the image sensor? I am exibiting the problems which sounds like it could be what you are seeing. I went ahead and send an email to canon. we will see what happens. I suggest you do the same.
