Shoot, forgot to mention, take a coat hanger (one coated with plastic so as not to cause spark). Tape the ends if you wish. Push that down the input tube once the hose is removed from below. :)

Camera needs to be in gallery/photo browse mode. Worked for me.

This could be a stuck shutter, or a damaged LCD, or a bad backlight on the LCD display, or maybe a loose ribbon connector from the LCD display to the main board, it's hard to say.
I would run it by a camera repair shop, to see what they think, and how much they would charge to fix it.
You can try to spray some compressed air into the lens assembly to try to free any dirt or lint that's worked it's way into the assembly, and you can also try to gently bump the camera with the palm of a hand, to try and free up a jammed gear inside the lens assembly.
Other than that, the unit will have to be opened up and serviced.

This is a common problem with this camera.

It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.

This camera is not covered under CCD advisory, however there are people who got it fixed without any charge. You need to call and complain. It would be worth a complain, as this is common problem even with Sony, however they never hesitate to replace or repair it at no cost.

Base from the description of your problem its clear that the issue here is with the LCD screen of the camera that is bad already and since this is already a 6 year old camera having it repair will worth the price of getting a new camera now, so I strongly suggest you just go get a new one.

It is known problem of ccd imager failure in Canon S230 camera and ccd imager chip will be replaced to have live view in camera mode.

Skip this kind of transfer, save time by buying and using a card reader/writer. This way it is not necessary to have the need for any software on the computer. You can transfer any files from the card to the computer, and you can write to the card as well, if necessary. I recommend never to write to the card until you have transferred all files from the card to the hard drive. That is because by writing to the card, you may delete files.

I'm afraid canon has no made any software for this camera for windows 7. The camera should show up in my computer or computer which you will find from start menu, most likely as a removeable storage device.
If the camera does not work right away when you plug it to a usb port, then the camera will not work with windows 7. Please buy a card reader, and use the cardreader to transfer your photos to the computer.

A card reader will cost you 5 to 30usd depending on what kind of a card reader you purchase. You can get a card reader from a local store, or from a camera dealer. Take your existing memory card with you to make sure you get the right kind of reader for your computer (USB) Any card reader will work with windows 7.
