Perhaps should be a problem with the Ds power supply with overvolt...try to change and test it with another Ds power supply... You said that the ds system is melted...If I were you I would open the Ds to search for damaged parts and try to restore it...or you can buy parts on ebay:

My son had not used his nintendo DS for some time but when he went to charge the battery, the light shined orange for a short while and then cut off.

I think its the fuse thats the problem. Try testing both the f1 and f2 fuses with a multimeter, chances are that one of the fuses have blown. Instead of replacing the fuses you can buy
a battery charger for the ds lite. search "Battery Charger for Nintendo dsl" on ebay It should
cost about $5.49

We think a neighbor girl spilled liquid on/in my son's DS Lite. It now won't power on and the orange light will stay on for only a minute or two when we attempt to charge the unit. The battery is good......

If the DS was turned on when the liquid was spilled on it I don't think there is much hope to be honest:(

If it's under warrenty send it back otherwise you might try taking it apart and use a hair dryer to dry it off... that's a long shot though!

The Ds lite powers up for a brief moment then crashes

well try to find DS parts in EBAY...

and don´t try to power the DS with a broken display ´cause it can short-circuit another part of your DS...and make things go Bad...

No power DS. Only Red Light...

Hi Drakex, it sounds exactly like the problem I had when I changed the screen on two ds's, my mainboard short circuited and blew the fuse, so it may not be a mainboard failure, you can actually solder a bridge across it, not for the faint hearted!, however, remember the fuse is there for a reason, so use the finest fuse wire you can find and bear in mind I can't be held responsible for the battery melting afterwards!!!!. There is a very in depth article on how to bridge the fuse, if you want it I can send you the link.

DS Lite does not power up

If the console has overcharged or has been used for long periods of time or could just be fluke, chances are the fuses are blown on the main motherboard try this link, this guy fixed my ds and i had the exact same problems as you guys have

Nintendo DS lite

Hi there, when you plug the charger in does the light go red and then turn off again? It sounds to me like the connection from the top screen to the bottom section of the console that contains the mainboard has become damaged or loose which is causing the console to short circuit. It is also possible that it has blown the fuse due to the loose connection, the fuse is F2 which can be repaired and as long as the loose connection is resolved then the console would then power up fine. Obviously the top part of the console which will not stand up on its own is a different problem and is caused either by a crack in the casing or a broken hinge barrel. It can be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing - I do repairs of this kind frequently. Hope this helps!
