Theres a multitude of areas you could look at. Being that it is a Parallel-ATA Drive, I'd start by making sure your BIOS is supporting/set correctly. Second, have you Already installed an OS? for that matter, is it a new or used HDD? Has it booted for you before? (on your system), the HITACHI drives are usually pretty good. More info would be helpful if you can.

Cheers.

The comp detecting the HDD is irrevelant, the fact it detects it means only it has detected the electronic part of the drive, if the actual mechanical part of the drive, and the platter are failing, then it will not work, i suggest taking it to someone who can test it.. you will know then

GETTING ERROR: REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED BOOT DEVICE. WHAT DO I DO?

its not detecting your HDD. on boot enter BIOS & check whether your HDD is being detected by the MB. IF not(most possible) then check the power & data cables to your HDD, Check your SMPS too, if SMPS OK then your HDD is corrupted. GET new HDD

HDD Problem

The info is not clear as to if it is a desktop or laptop . However what u could try is reseating the hdd and also get into BIOS by tapping F2 and u would find a option to restore defaults, after restoring check if the hdd is getting detected . Also make sure that external peripheral like Ext hdd and other usb devices are disconnected. Update once u have tried this.

DIY solution for data recovery on a failing Hitachi HDD

Yes it is possible to data recover from this hard disk to using "active partetion recover v2.0 or above" software. This software should be registered and also bootable disk. It will be possible to data recover, if it will be detect in dos mode.

Procedure:
Insert the bootable disk into CD-Rom and choose boot from the cd rom and now check your disk is detected or not, if detected follow the instruction and your all data could be recover with your complete partions.

Good Luck

Burners cannot be read

Do a search for PC Fixer, a free tool. I had this problem on a Gateway I was trying to add this drive to. PC Fixer fixed the CD-ROM problem, but the drive seems to not be compatible with the Gateway for use as a master boot drive.
